My wife came in from the front yard a while ago and told me there were bees coming out of our drip system valve box.

Fortunately they had just started building, cause I was able to flood them out, and open the box lid without getting stung.

No bees allowed at Casa de Rat, especially right outside the front door, what with us having killer bees around here. And we're supposed to have a bad killer bee season this year.

I prefer to catch my killer bees with chopsticks. Takes some time but I show them who's boss. They taste better with chocolate BTW.

Real men use chopsticks....you've let us down Rat.

I think I'm allergic and usually use the chopstick version of instant death via spray, followed by "CFRIZZ" style of running while waving arms for extra propulsion.

These are not bees, these are wasps (real wasps, not WASPs - white anglosacson protestants). Big difference!

I don't think you understand. I'd take on a hornet nest before I gave a second glance to a hive of killer bees. It doesn't get much worse than Africanized bees.

    Is it bees 26-10-honeybee.jpg

    or wasps

    wasp.jpg

My family had honey bees when I was a kid, and those bees were nice! Yes, they'd bite from time to time, but we had tons of honey and all other good stuff.

I have a problem with those friggin carpenter bees. They drill big holes in my shed and are very hard to get rid of. If I fill the holes in they just drill new ones.

The killer bees are Africanized honey bees (a cross mated African and European bee). They do everything bees do, except they're exponentially more protective of the hive than standard European honey bees. The problem is you can't tell if what they are until it's too late.

I grew up around yellow jackets, they're pretty nasty too, but not on par with killer bees.

I hope we don't get killer bees, we've already got these things, 'Asian Giant Hornets'. 1st time I saw one, after moving to SC, I just about **** myself!
This picture does NOT do it justice. It looks like a bumble bee, but with the wing span, and proportional body size of a dragonfly.
AND, apparently, they don't die with conventional treatment.:(

One more thing, according to Wikpedia, theyre stingers are 6mm long, and they kill about 70 people a year in Japan.

We also have Trantula Wasps. They sting a Trantula, drag the thing into a den and lays an egg on it. THe egg hatches, and the lava eats the trantula.

It looks like a huge evil black wasp, because it is.

    BTW, the bees are gone.

Also I think those asian giant hornets kill off bee hives. I saw something like that on one of those educational channels.

About 8 years or so ago, I turned over a log and discovered an a nest consisting of 6 or 7 giant hornets. Normally, I'd gently flip that log back down and make a retreat. Thankfully, this was during the tail end of winter and it was clear that the hornets were still in slumber mode.

Being the nerd I am, a large circular plastic container was not far from my side... so I decided to capture each of these hornets and observed of' for a few hours, totally in awe of their beauty and size. They must have been a good 2.5-3 inches in length.

Aside from when I let them go, I've never seen one buzzing about.. Cool as they are, I'm not complaining...

Interesting choice of dead threads to resurrect.

Personally, if I came face to face with one of those Asian hornets...I'd shat myself, and not feel ashamed about it later.

And yeah, those hornets do take out entire bee hives. I saw them doing it on the discovery channel, and it's pretty creepy how much bigger they are than regular bees.

A cicada wasp is what made my heart stop and brought out the whimpering little girl in me! Similar to the Asian hornet is sheer size, these things are like yellow jacket wasps on steroids. I later found out that only the females can sting and all they are interested in stinging is a cicada.

Yep, SC has no Aisan hornets, just Cicadia killer wasps. Just as big, but not nearly as mean. There are thousands in my yard when a certain flowering bush blooms. Never had a problem with them. Yellow jackets on the other hand...........
