I've been hearing from a few people (including Polkies) about a version of the1812 Overture that supposedly sounds great. Which is this and what am I missing out on? m00npie mentioned it at one of the gatherings, but I don't remember exactly what he said...

That's it. The one without the warning on the front.

I'm not sure who it was released by, but there's a version out there that the cannon blasts at high volume can blow your speakers.

I have that Telarc disk in DVD A. Some serious LFE during the cannon shots. Evidently recorded live, outdoors with real Napoleonic cannon. It's a wonderful recording with huge dynamic range and begs to be cranked. Just make sure your sub (or speakers) can handle the subsonics. Yes, there is a warning label.

Wow, that's interesting. I thought this was a SQ-oriented recording, didn't know it had lots of LFE:eek:

Only the 1812 Overature has the LFE. The rest of Tschaikovski's works on this disk are standard recordings.

Telarc has the warning. The Amazings handle it with aplomb.

    Not all Telarcs do.

Is there a difference between the ones with and without the warning? Or are they the same CD, just packaged differently?

I have it on CD and LP. The LP has that warning as well....it will make the arm jump straight out of the groove.

I need to check this recording out; I enjoy intense classical music at high volumes. Maybe Amazon has it...

Quick question about DVD-A can it be played on anything that can play DVDs? Say my Samsung Blu-Ray player?

not really related but cool, my mom saw a concert performace of 1812, they used cannons on stage, (this was in europe around 1960).

They always bring in some artillary division with 3 cannons to fire at the appropriate times somewhere close to the hatchshell when the song gets played during the July 4th concert by the Pops!

I really don't like the SACD as much as the redbook or LP of this release. That is the only SACD that I own that I don't think kicks the daylights out of a redbook CD.

Old question, but since new people might be reading this thread...

Both DVD-Audio and SACD need special players. Not all DVD players or blu-ray players will play the high resolution tracks back from these formats. There are 'universal players' that will play just about everything. But look in the features of players you are interested in to see if these formats are listed.
