so nothing is going to be purchased right now... but in the near future, say 6-8 months down the line my dad is going to make a fair sized purchase.
prob between 2-3k$ on a receiver and speakers for a home theater set up that will serve as also a good way to fill the house with music. He loves to hear things coming out of dif directions like say a gunshot on the right. and is a beatles maniac, he loves all the dif intruments like the deep strings and high symbol crashes...
what do u guys recommend?

Need more info than that bubba. How big is the room? Will speakers have to be placed against a wall? HDMI ? Room for a amp in his rack or stand? Does he want a multi zone receiver to play music in other rooms? In-ceiling speakers? Open to buying used gear? Does he want 5.1 or 7.1?

If you don't narrow it down, suggestions will be all over the place.

Room is prob 30feetx30feet..... at least the viewing area is. rear speakers can be mounted on the wall angled for the best sound stage....front speakers will prob be right in front of the tv. plenty of room for equipment. Just 1 room should be fine. HDMI would be best - we have a nice sony LCD. no in-ceiling, he prob wont want to buy anything used. 5.1 or 7.1 (he just wants it to sound good.

The products you are considering are going to make a great system. If the budget allows you might look at the RTi line of speakers which are a step up form the entry Monitor. If that is not possible the Monitor are a great value on their own.

    Elo,

I would highly recommend the use of two subs with your room size, when you use at least two subs you greatly reduce the possibilities of room cancellation nodes as sound waves meet each other in the room, also called standing waves, sometimes waves can also reinforce each other causing an increase in amplitude at a particular frequency. Some folks use as many as eight subs, four in/on the floor and four in the ceiling, now that is overkill. You will need to move the sub(s) around to see where they sound best.

Polks newest line up of RT speakers is the RTiA line, RT means Reference Theatre, so they are designed with HT in mind, which ones you get depends on budget and preference for floorstander or bookshelf, either can be effective for a HT.

If your talking 2-3 k for gear and speakers, and you want new, your coin isn't going too far.I will agree on the 2 subs thing for a room that size.Re-think the used part,as you can get a hell of a lot more for your money.

Really,do your best, audio gear is not known for holding it's value, well, most anyway.I can see getting a receiver new,but speakers can be had for half of new and only a year old too.Look for some RTI 8's or 10's and take others up on the dual subs.In a room that big, your sound will get washed out fairly easy if you don't choose your gear wisely.Csi5 for a center would do nicely too.Our own FS thread,or Audiogon is a good place to start.

True in the used thing. And i noticed that you wanted the monitor line of towers but the rti line for the center and surounds i highly and i mean highly recommend that you pick a line and use that one for all of your speakers. The discontinued rti's like in my system can be found cheap so just keep looking. On the receiver look on ebay thats where i bought my H/K and that was direct from H/K. It was like a 3000 receiver and i got it for i think 700 shipped so keep that in mind. Hope that helps.
If life had more tubes it would be a lot smoother.
