ok. so I get in my email box today... what has to be one of the most interesting sounding CD player from what it can do and the specs on it. It looks pretty sweet too. not flashy, but what i'm more concerned about is what it's got under the hood

There has been a lot of info and scandal about the 840 since it came out. You will read reviews across the board. Phil has one and loves it. Solid had one and liked it but just sold it for a Raysonic I believe. It was on my radar, with the exception of it being made by Cambridge Audio. I have had 4 CA units over the last 4 years - 2 640C's a 500SE and a 640H on demo. The 500SE was DOA out of the box, the rest started glitching within 20 hours of use. CA moved all its production to China and QC went to the crapper. The 840 may be the shiznit, but I will not take a chance on CA again.

I've probably owned about 15 pieces of CA....no issues at all. The 840C doesn't really interest me but it is getting solid reviews.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Just do it man!!! It's one mean mother humper that is heads above other players costing a whole lot more $$$$$ & then some. Most other players don't even come close to the sound quality of this unit...period! CA also did their homework on this player...it has two digital inputs that you can use to access it's internal DAC's for other sources. Down the road I'm sure I'll be involved with a Squeezebox or similar piece & using the CA 840's DAC's that'll be one awesome set-up."2 Channel & 11.2 HT "Two Channel:Magnepan LRSSchiit Audio Freya S - SS preConsonance Ref 50 - Tube preParasound HALO A21+ 2 channel ampBluesound NODE 2i streameriFi NEO iDSD DAC Oppo BDP-93KEF KC62 sub Home Theater:Full blown 11.2 set up. -
I had my CA D500SE for a while and never experienced any problems with it."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

My 840C broke last month. The display started fluctuating, and then wouldn't power up at all one day. It's under warranty and back in upstate New York getting fixed. So, I wouldn't recommend buying used. Sounded great when it worked, but I actually find the Perreaux CD player a better match with SDA's.

The reviews seem very impressive with this CD player.
Can you wait until the tax rebate?.. -
Badass player. Needs to be paired with Tube preamp in my opinion.

Save some coin and get an Ayre CX-7e instead.
My friend has one. I like its blue-dash led when it powers up. One of the best players.. -

I have owned a CA 500Se, CA 640c V1 and i currently own a CA 840c. The 840c is a Outstanding CD player.Spearit sound may have Demo 840c's for $1099 with a full factory warranty so you may want to check them out thanks....WCW IIIRogue Audio stereo 100 tube amplifier - Lector Zoe preamplifier with 6H30 pi's

I got a 840C from Del and was a noticeable improvement over the very-well-thought-of Bel Canto DAC2. (smoother highs and vocals, more "air," more SDA)
I'd say with 2 digital inputs, balanced outputs, a totally dimmable display, the CA 840C CDP is can't miss without dropping some way more serious coin.
