Old Project TT

I picked this up today for nothing off a CL ad......Project One DR-115. I am aware of Project's current models, way out of my price range, but I was unaware that they had older models that were mostwly made out of Japan. Does anyone know anything about the DR-115? I understand this may be a Hitachi OEM rig.

The belt was toast and the Acutex 206 cart is outdated, along with the stylus being smoked, so I haven't been able to listen to it. I'll be getting a new belt and am trying to find a decent cart that won't be overkill for a free deck. Any suggestions?

    very cool. post a pic. i've never seen that model of Project

    what do you want to spend on a cartridge? there are all price ranges...

    I'll get a pic up as soon as the wife brings the camera home.....but it's not a Dual. It's a Project One. As far as the cart goes I'd like to stay under $60 if possible. I just put a Shure M97xE ($60) on a Pioneer PL-112D ($25) and the combination is pleasant. The same price ratio may pay off here.

    Nice snag. I'd love to see some pictures.

    I'd say you're on the right track with that Shure cartridge. Some others you might check into>>> Sumiko Oyster, Goldring Elan, Grado Black. All are good cartridges.

    Sounds like a nice snag, congrats. I love my Pro-Ject table. Not sure how the old stuff is, but the newer stuff is really nice so I'm assuming it was all developed off what you have and therefore probably pretty nice as well. Pics when you get a chance!

    I was thinking of getting a new belt and cart (possibly Ortofon super om10) from lpgear. Any one order from them? Any suggestions on a cart? Thanks.

    Looks a lot like an old Technics or Pioneer.

    ahh... Not ProJ-ect. The brand of the tt in question is "Project/One". Entirely different beast.

    got it.

    Project/One was either a Pioneer sub-brand and/or the house brand of a hifi audio chain. More details as events warrant.

    Supposedly, Project/One was a subsidiary of Pioneer and was distributed by Playback Inc. which owned the Playback Stereo stores from the 70's and 80's. It was one of the house brands that they sold during that time period.

    Thanks for the info. So I'm likely looking at a Pioneer-subsidized, Hitachi-manufactured table? The build seems similar to Technics and Pioneer, like others have mentioned. The platter feels slightly lighter than the one on my Pioneer PL-112D. I'm still wondering if it would be worth another $70-$100 in parts to get it running.

    Nope (IMNSHO).
    EDIT... but, then again, if the investment is for a belt and cartridge; why not? The cartridge can be re-used later on another tt, so all you're really in for is the belt. It looks like it's worth the price of a belt...

    looks ok to me.. not minty.. but not horrible either. fixer up.. and spin some vinyl and see how she sounds.

    I have a friend who has a MCS turntable, and I guess those were made by Technics back in the day, but sold under the MCS / JC Penny name.
