Wall Mounted TV Height?

I did not know where to ask this question so I will try here.

I have convinced my wife that the huge entertainment center we have has to go. Currently the TV is sitting on a shelf that is 20 1/2" off the floor which I think is to low. The top of the TV is at 49 1/2" inches. I bought a wall mount but I am not sure what height to mount the TV. We sit @ 8'-0" from the tv on a sofa. My TV is currently a 40" LCD. My next challenge is to find a rack that will hold my 7 components and a CSi5. I have been looking at the VTI BL 503 with the addition of a 7" add on shelf to hold the CSi5 and whatever else on either side of the CSi5. The height of these racks together are @ 33" and the CSi5 is 8" tall. I do not want to mount the CSi5 above the TV on a shelf because it will stick out like a sour thumb. Does that push the TV to high? My set up is a compromise between a HT and a 2 channel with out the room to separate. Any suggestions for the TV height and ideas are welcome.

PS. Shop vac is for RCM and the black box all the way on the bottom is a 5 channel amp inside the glass.

There is no specific height, it's more like whatever is a comfortable viewing angle from the sofa/distance you will be sitting at. Since every sofa sits differently, and everyone sits different on the sofa when watching a movie....so just do what feels right to you.

Yep...whatever viewing angle is best for any given distance is what you want to work with. I mounted my 50" plasma 36" off the floor as I am sitting right at 13 feet back from it and there is no weird neck angle for watching it. It's when they go above a fireplace where they get a little straining on the neck but that's what and where some people like for them to go. That's just too high for me.

The center of the TV should be level to your sitting eye height. You shouldn't be looking up or down at the screen. Some folks will argue looking down a few degrees is okay. Lookin up is never a good thing. Unless the screen is on the ceiling or you are watching reclined. Like in a hosplital bed.

Does any one know of a decent rack that is 3 components wide and 2 high that will allow me to keep my arms and legs? I may have to go the DIY route.

The picture in the first post was what my set up looked like yesterday. I made some changes and I think they are an improvement. I still have some cable issues to deal with and final placement to work on but so far so good. I already got an unsolicited WA which is good. I will give some tunes a spin tonight to see if I have some imaging and sound staging improvements.

The center of the TV should be level to your sitting eye height. You shouldn't be looking up or down at the screen.

I agree. Set looks way too high now.

I don't think up a little would be bad. I have to put my arm behind my head to keep my multifocal lenses at the right attitude when in my recliner, and that is when I am not even fully reclined. Or wear my single vision specs.:cool:

Just now realized you went with VTI -- they are sweet inexpensive stands. Good choice. Im using that for the 2 ch gear.

I think it may be high after watching a little bit of TV. It is nice not to have to look around my feet at the TV. My problem is that I have and outlet and a cable opening about 4" below the top of the TV that I would like to hide because it would be a very difficult to repair. I could drop the TV down and put the TV on a shelf just above the TV. Time will tell.

The base of our wall mount 50" plasma is 40" from the floor, the room is 12.5' wide, with the couch against the opposite wall. So figure 11' viewing distance.

We've found it to be just fine at that height.


So, your sub doesn't affect your TT?

Your eyes should be even with the lower 1/3 of the screen.
