Am I doing too much?
Ok... Back in December I got a pair of r50's to go with my r30's and 15's....then in Feb. I upgraded to the RTI10's and a CSi3 center...boy what an upgrade. Now I have the r50's running as rears. I had a chance to grab a pair of fxi3's (white ugg, I hasitated) and they were gone in a few days.
Now I have a chance to pick up a pair of RTi 8's for about 120 each new..don't ask don't tell....
Are these good for surrounds or keep the 50's?
I am happy with the 50's and I know the 8's are good as I almost got them before the 10's but I don't know if it would be a good step towards the rears.
1) does rears matter that much...I mean the 50's are great and I hear them clear
2) should I wait for some fxi3's to come around again
3) should I just jump in and pick up the 8's?
4) How the heck will I get rid of all these r's????
Please help cuz I may jump on these by Sunday

If you are getting them from Tweeter's clearance then there is a chance that you can get them transferred between stores (within certain regions). There are also really cheap CSi5's in the Northeast right now. I called and placed a deposit on one and the sales person had two pair of FXi3's (white) come in from other stores. I was able to pick the better pair. The CSi5 had a few scrapes but it was in good condition. The FXi's were about the same but dirt was very noticeable since they were white.
1) Currently using SONY POS bookshelves and I really don't notice timbre mismatch. The 50's may work fine. I tried the FXi3's for a little bit and didn't see a huge improvement but I have placement problems which may have covered up the difference.
2) If you really want the FXi3's then get them now. It's hard to find them at Tweeter's low price of $108 per pair. You should still be able to sell them on Ebay or here even though they are dirty and scraped-up.
3) The 8's are a good price. If you really want them then pick them up. Although if you become disappointed with them or think they are overkill then it may be difficult to resell them due to their size. A lot of the clearance stuff at Tweeter's doesn't have packaging.
4) The 50's are nice, and probably not worth selling. You can try local pickup since shipping will probably be a pain. Someone sold a pair of 50's on the FM recently for about $100 + shipping. You could also put them in another room. I would probably sell mine if I could get a local buyer for $100.
Let us know what you decide. -
I should have mentioned that some people recommend placing surround speakers 2-3 feet above the ear. So the 50's and 8's may not be optimal. I have heard others recommend putting floorstanders on a 1 foot block if used as rears. So using floorstanders may not be the best. Again, this is hearsay since I haven't tried it myself yet.
Also, if you have multi-room abilities with your AVR just place the 50's in an adjacent room. -
Thanks...I may call them and place my order for the fxi 3's at that price...i hate white but that price is too good. I think it would be better than the 8's as for the speaker placement...Plus the 50's do well....so for speaker placement should I use the 50's as sides or backs...Retired Onkyo 520 (returned broken HK 247)

From what I have read on this forum, place the FXi3's on the sides and the 50's as backs. The sides get slightly more signal than the rears, so timbre matching is slightly more important. Also, the dipole configuration of the FXi3's are probably better suited for the sides.

With the 8's you'll probably gain better mid/bass response but this is may be of lesser importance in surround speakers to some. The benefit gained from the FXI's is that they help diffuse the rear channel effects so that they are less directional.____________________________________________________________

Max, I see where they can grab some 3's for me so I can get away with the 3's but the wife would beat me over the 8's.....I will call them in the morning and see what they can do....for the pair the price can't be beat!
I'll use them as sides....I'm building a theater in the basement and those can work on the side even though they are white but in the dark it does not make difference...just asthetics.Retired Onkyo 520 (returned broken HK 247)

LOL...LOL:):):)
Never will I take that dive for years...this is one expensive hobby that only we appreciate...
I did see a chipped 15 at my frys for 399....but naw I would look forever to make that set up and its 4 ohms so a whole new set of problems would fall in place.
I like the Rti but I am seeing problems with the csi3 and its limitations on some music but its not enough to deter me at this point...still awesome on movies so the 3 stays!Retired Onkyo 520 (returned broken HK 247)

You know you want to go LSi.
A CSi5 in cherry is ONLY $158. I hid the purchase from the wife. You can always flip it or the 3 here or on Ebay. The 5 goes for $250-$300 on Ebay. The bigger problem is that they probably don't have the packaging. Make sure if you put a deposit on them to ask if they will refund (not just store credit) if you don't like the condition. They told me yes, but you want to make sure. Check the clearance for different neighboring states. It will save you a trip if you have all the stuff you want shipped into one store.
I have R50's, RTi6's, CSi5, and FXi3's now. I am seriously itching for some LSi9's. I am more music than HT (kids are young). I am debating keeping the RTi stuff for HT and then someday building a separate 2 channel system with LSi9's. However, I could be persuaded in selling the the RTi stuff. I think you may be close to me. Interested? I'll throw in the SONY POS bookshelves for free. I'll understand if you say no because you decided on some LSi gear instead. -
Max I used to live in Buffalo but now I'm down south....I just ordered the Fxi3's for 115.00 flat with tax...I will be happy with this set up...at least I will make myself happy. Just like I will make myself happy with the csi3 as it handles 95% of what I throw at it. Overall its still an impressive system once I have my theater built. On movies the rti's are clear. Just music that they lag sometimes on certain songs. That's Ok with me because I know that unless I spend a big some of loot then its never going to happen...I'd just keep chasing a dream. As long as it don't hurt my ears I will be ok. I will amp the rti10's when I get the theater done. This will make a difference in my opinon as many will also say. But to know that I got 12-15 hundred dollars worth of speakers for under 600 is all good to me. Now if the LSI were around the same I would not flinch. I made a jump from the r series and I'm done. This hobby just gets down right silly after a while and its hard to justify alot of it. Just my point of view.Retired Onkyo 520 (returned broken HK 247)
