    Did not test the optical output, but on my previous yamaha htr-5960 I was experimenting the same subtle low level distortion over optical when the pcm was choosen in the menu.

    Since you are using this speaker as your mains without a subwoofer...

    It's no wonder you are not getting optimal sound. Either you are eliminating the LFE channel completely (leading to an unbalanced sound since movie tracks are mastered to include it) or you are feeding the LFE channel to your RTi6s. And there is just no way the bookshelfs can reproduce the LFE channel as accurately as a properly integrated sub. You would also have to account for the 10 db PCM LFE boost as suggested earlier.

    You may prefer the sound of bitstreamed DD to lossless audio under these less than ideal conditions, but this isn't the typical system that you can make generalizations from.
