i'm shopping around for a blu ray player right now. i have a question. which blu ray players support dolby true hd and dts master/ hd. i want to be ready when i get my new reciver this summer.

Look at the LG super Blu BH200. I got one and I think it is a GREAT player. Takes hardly any time to load and plays all DVDs awsome. Great picture on Blu Ray, HD and upconverts standard DVDs near HD quality.

get A PS3 it does it all or this is the one i will be getting "Sony BDP-S500 Blu-ray"

Personally i would wait for the prices to go down. Right now they just won the war so they can charge anything they want. I would wait till so time this summer or until you see quilty players for around 250.00. This is just my opinion

Get a PS3 or wait for a decent stand alone play to come out. Nothing supports BR 2.0 except PS3.

Again this was the main reason I bought the PS3 the fact that I am enjoying a couple games is icing on the cake.

I hear the PS3 lacks some of the true low end response for 7.1 that the stand alone players have

If your like me and have no desire to use the features of the 2.0 profile, the Panny BD-30 is the way to go. Sound & Vision magazine claim it is the best stand alone BD player on the market to date. I love mine.

Bottom Line:

Blu-ray Disc players selling for less than $500 are still scarce — Sony's PS3 game console, which starts at less than $400, remains one of the best values around. But among standalone models, you'll be hard-pressed to find a $500 player that's as pretty to look at or as well equipped, or that works as smoothly as Panasonic's DMP-BD30. It's not without its compromises, and it'll no doubt be seeing a lot of new competition this year. But for now, this is a quite recommendable entry in a narrow field.

PS3 also will not let you bitstream out to your receiver. Also it does not have multi channel out so i believe you will not be able to get the dolbyHD stuff. I not sure about the ps3 but i know i am going to wait for a bitstream able player that is cheaper than 500.00 dollars.

I have a BD30 as well, I don't know about all these "advanced audio" options, as I run mine via Toslink to my DAC, but it's picture is beautiful. SDVD playback is nothing to write home about, but it's nowhere near as bad as some whould have you believe. I found that running SDVD's at 1080i output, and letting DLP de-interlace helps alot. Apparently it's the de-interlacing--not the upscaling that lacks in the BD30. The Blu Ray picture is stunning--I run 720p out as my DLP is 720p native.

I just picked up a Pioneer BDP-95FD player and it is fantastic,pq,sq are all great.It is pricey but it does everything very well.

I think the PS3 does allow bitsream through HDMI. My PS3 (40 gig version) currently isn't hooked up, but I did change the setting in the main audio settings menu when watching a DTS only DVD, when it was hooked up. If I remember correctly, you can swap between LPCM and Bitsream for HDMI audio.

you can't and thier will not be an update for that either. You can get 5.1 and that is it. search this forum because this is where i found the answers.If it did i would have one right now, but i want to see that trueHD on my receiver screen.

I vote PS3, I just got one and it is awesome, great blu-ray player, can play games on it too, built in web browser, and can be used with TVersity to stream audio and video to, which is what I am doing right now. I believe the PS3 does do bitstream out but only through HDMI. And it also supports Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-MA.

I think the statement that it will do only 5.1 is incorrect. It does support ALL the new HD sound formats, however it decodes them internally.

^This is correct.

The PS3 is the most full featured player out right now.
It can internally decode DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD then pass them as a 5.1 OR 7.1 LPCM signal.


The only things you may want that a PS3 doesn't offer are:
- Multichannel Analog outputs (If your receiver doesn't have v1.2+ HDMI input)
- Passing high def audio codecs to the receiver for decoding (This would be a picky thing as there is no difference when decoded internally instead of passed to the receiver for decoding).
- Quieter system (Some people don't like the fan, I've never had the problem as I listen to my movies loud).

It has the full "low end response", but suffers from the same PCM 10 db boost implementation inconsistencies on the receiver/pre side, same as internally decoding stand alone players.

And actually people are right about bitstreaming on both 'sides' of this thread for the ps3.

The ps3 WILL NOT bitstream TrueHD or DTS-HD MA, but it can decode them internally and send them out as PCM in up to 7.1 over hdmi for the rare blu-rays now that actually have 7.1 tracks.

The ps3 WILL bitstream regular DD and DTS or decode them internally and that's why the settings are there in the menus for hdmi bitstream.
