So this weekend in my quest for good used vinyl I was out checking garage sales and come across a guy who had 3 old tables. Two were ready for the dump but the third was a Pioneer PL-514 that had been neglected and was dusty and dirty. $5.00 got it home. The cartridge was a Grado FT+ with no stylus. My local hi-fi store had an Audio-Technica CN5625AL with stylus for $40.00 which is a little steep for that unit but this is a smaller town. Anyway, I cleaned and lubed and polished and set it all up with some help from a great website
http://www.soundfountain.com/ put on Pink Floyd's The Wall and was blown away with how good this table and cheap cartridge sounded. Every bit as good as my Dual CS606 with Ortofon cartridge and stylus. $45.00 bucks and part of an evening and I've got a great turntable. Is the old Grado cartridge worth finding a stylus for? It's the kind held in place with four tiny magnets. I know Grado make some good cartridges but this one is fairly old. Any thoughts?

Call Grado and ask them. I've spoken to Joe personally on the phone with headphone questions. http://www.gradolabs.com/
Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

Nice find!!! It's always good to hear about a table being saved, and finding a new home.

I too have found some good turtable deals recenly. Due to cold weather though mine have all been via craigslist. As of right now I have 6 turntables i've snagged cheap. The best one so far was a very minty lab-220 that a couple gave me because they didn't want to haul it with them on their move to Colorado. However if all goes well tomorrow I hope to trump that one. In fact I might even have to post some pics.

    Well...Enjoy your new toy!
