Ok,

Finally purchased both of these units.

I hooked them up using an HDMI cable, and started the BR Movie 300, which comes encoded with DD TrueHD 5.1 audio. But, for whatever reason, either the BR player is not sending that format to the receiver, or the receiver is not decoding it. The best I can get is normal DD 5.1

I have confirmed to the best of my abilities that both units are setup to Auto negotiate the format. Is there something else I am missing? Is it possible my HDMI cable does not support passing the HD audio formats? It is about 2 years old. Not sure if this the reason. Any ideas?

Thanks guys,

Lonwa

Edit: Nevermind, reading conflicting web stuff on if the player is capable of various format bitstreams. Just to cover all the bases, if everything is set-up correctly, you may still need to choose the TrueHD track from a blu-ray's menu. If the blu-ray defaults to DD, then that's all the components will be able to auto-detect. But I don't own the combination you have, so not sure what else could be the problem.

Make sure you set the BD player to 'bitstream' the TrueHD, also make sure you turn off anything related to secondary audio, or sound effects because these can cause the player to down-convert everything to legacy DD.

Finally, make sure you set the receiver to not send out HDMI audio (to your display). All of these things can screw things up.

    Thanks for the info.

I have confirmed that the DD TrueHD bitstream is enabled on the BR player. I could not find any place in the Disc's menu to change any of the audio or video settings. Maybe this is my issue, since how would I change the language...? I will check that when I get home.

I do have the AVR feeding audio to my TV via the HDMI cable. Is it a known bug that you cannot decode DD TrueHD when you also output stereo to your TV speakers?

    Thanks guys,

Not a bug, per se, but the TV is only a 2 channel audio device, so when the receiver initiates an HDMI handshake with the TV, it sees a 2 channel device. The Bluray player sees the same handshake info and it will only send a 2 channel signal out (because you have it set to Auto). Just turn off the HDMI audio out (receiver setting) and I think your problem will go away.

As far as settings in the menu, usually the Bluray menu has a setup section that deals with audio languages, subtitles, etc. Alternately, you can just hit the 'audio' button on the bluray remote and it should either cycle through each available soundtrack, or bring up a sub-menu to chose the soundtrack.

Thank you very much. I was able to get it to work when I hit the audio button on the remote. TrueHD was audio track 2, and the receiver auto recognized it and started decoding.

And MAN the sound is phenomenal, almost as good as going from Stereo to DD 5.1. It truly does sound like a theater system. I am very pleased with my purchase. I would highly recommend the AVR-2808CI to anyone.

Mind you I do use a Parasound amp for driving my speakers, but from a pre-amp/pro perspective, this unit is well worth the money.

    Thanks guys, for the help!
