Onkyo owners....Is there a heat issue??

I was able to save around $1000 bucks and I was looking to purchase an Onkyo 805 or 875 and then came across beefs about them running too hot and frying/melting/exploding/causing severe disfigurement, (j/k) etc. . So, better to ask the ppl who own them. I plan on putting it in a built in cabinet (doors are made of speaker material with wood frame). There is about 18" between shelves. I now have concerns . Appreciate the input, thx.

All equipment can run warm to hot, it all depends on how you use it. I may suggest a small cooling fan if heat is an issue.

What loudspeakers are you planning on using?

So the frame is solid but the panel is fabric? There is 18" between the shelves, minus the height of the actual unit? If it's yes to both....I don't foresee any issues. It WILL get fairly warm in there but it shouldn't be dangerous.

Yes to both.
I currently have older Sony towers (actually very good). Saving for RTi10's right now. I also have CSiA6 center, FXiA6 sides and rears.

I have the 605 and it gets a little warm but not awful but then it hasn't been put into an actual rack yet. Anymore, a lot of the receivers that are packed with all that video and surround processing circuitry stay a little warmer. If mine does get a little too warm once put in the rack, I'll use something like this that we have at work.

what would you expect when you were asking an electronic to play music for 6-8 hours straight

The 705 and 805/875 have two thermally controlled fans under the amp heatsinks that kick on when needed (and are very quiet). As long as you give it some breathing room, it'll be fine. If you're putting ANY equipment in an enclosed cabinet, you need to have some sort of ventilation for that cabinet though, at the very least to push/pull air through that speaker material you have as a door.

If I'm being honest... If your plan is to run RTi10s off of it, here's what I'd suggest: KEEP SAVING FOR NOW. Onkyo just released their -06 models on the lower end, meaning a 706 and 806 can't be far behind. When they're first released, places like jr.com and onecall usually have ridiculously good deals on them, or at the very least you should see the -05 models drop in price as they clear them out.

If it were my money and I was just itching to get the best I could for the money, I'd snag a 705 on the cheap (easy enough to find for around $550 if you poke around), use it for now, then eventually use it as a pre-pro with some solid external amplification to really make those RTi10s sing. The 705 does the same audio processing as the 805 (and doesn't run as hot), so you're missing nothing by doing that. You can find a 7 channel amp for a fairly decent price, especially if you're not afraid to look at used units. I know you could at least throw a $900 Outlaw 7125 amp with it and end up with a far more honest 125w/ch system than the internal amplification in the Onkyos (which are rated with only 2 channels driven). Just a suggestion.

July/August is about the time frame those 2 models will be out. Even with the "talk" about the 576 and 606 models, it's mainly the addition of more HDMI inputs and the rest stays about the same. It's a digital A/V world and that's what's driving them right now.

i just bought an 805 and it stays on all day because some people at my house never leave. The 805 gets hot for sure but mine does not get to hot and that is with it on all day like i said. I love this unit and for once do not feel ripped off. Assesories 4 less has Onkyo for cheap even older models like kuntasensei has mentioned.

My 901 has been the hottest component I've owned. It's in a cabinet with 6" clearance but I run a fan on it when on and no problems.

It can get HOT!
