I have been wanting to get into vinyl and decided when I had the money I was going to start with a new Rega P1 to get my feet wet.

Well... I don't have the money yet but a Rega P2 popped up on ebay that is local.

I was hoping you guys could tell me what it is worth and if it looks like a good table. The guy is talking about cartridges and tone arms and I know nothing about any of it.

1. Basically what I need to know is what is the top dollar I should pay for this thing.

2. Would this be a good beginner table?

Heres the link

I have a P2 and love it. Shipping TT's can be dangerous so local is great.

    good luck,

Wow. Way to answer his questions! Oh well, at least you increased your post count.

The Planer 2 is a good table. The cartridge he has on it is decent but nothing too great. Assuming it is in good shape and all is in perfect working order I still probably wouldn't give more than $200 total for it. And even that might be a little steep. If it had the newer rb250 arm that might be another story.

Keep in mind this is just my opinion. Based off entry tables like the P1, MMF-2.2 etc. I would find it tough to justify more than that.

What they heck is your problem. I have one and I like it (nice TT {affirmation} and it being local is a plus {affirmation}).

    Thanks for both your responses.

    No worries guys.

I knew someone would chime eventually on the questions.

$200.oo seems about right but I don't think I would be willing to pay more than $125 or $150 at the most for it.

At $200 I would just assume wait and get a new P1 for just a little more.

I'll watch it and see what happens.

That is an old Planar 2. I have a newer P3/2000. These were upgraded by Rega about 5 years ago. My P3/2000 is worth about $600 I'd say with a good cartridge included, so an old Planar 2 like the one you are looking at is maybe $200-250? Good luck, but be sure you know you are getting an older table.

I knew it was the older table which is why I am not willing to pay very much.

If you had posted that the older model were superior and were worth much more it might be a dfferent story.

But for some reason when it comes a my first TT I really want a new one.

The only reason I am looking at this is maybe I could get it cheap and that it is local.

I have a feeling it will sell for well over what I am willing to pay. But you never know.

I'll just watch it and see:)

If you can afford it, new is the way to go with turntables. Sometimes with used ones, there can be problems with it that even the seller is unaware of, and by the time they surface, it's too late to initiate a return. There are exceptions of course, and if you can get the seller to agree beforehand to some sort of return policy, then all is good in the 'hood.

I had a dingbat ship me a TT with the platter still in the cover. Luckily, it was the junk fibreboard platter and it didn't damage anything. Next time, I will either buy new or local.

Excuse me for interrupting, but engtaz is a member of this forum and one of the nicest one's to boot. If he has a short one liner that he wants to contribute, let him do so. A personal attack is against the rules and IMO, your comment was uncalled for.

That said, the TT looks like it would be a good start for an introduction, or reintroduction to vinyl. $200.00 is something that you could recoup if it's not your cup of tea and would be worth giving a shot. I started back out with the Rega P3 and thogh I was pleased with the sound, the upgrade bug hit fast and now I have the Music Hall MMF-5 that a Polkie hooked me up with.

Also, I have heard from the owner of a shop I deal with here in Charlotte that TT prices went up a certain percentage lately, so just verify before you let this one pass that the prices are still current. Hope this helps.

    Thanks for the input.

Looks like it has leveled off at $206.00 with 10 hours left.

I would imagine it will go for $250 or better and at that price I would just assume get a new P1 for a $100 more....

    Thanks for everybodys help!

    A P2 can be upgraded further than a P1.

He's right. But keep in mind the P2 is not the same thing as the Planer 2. I realize you may already know that, just wanted to make sure.

I was in the same position last month and I decided to go with a new P1 instead of used. Paid $350 at my local Hi-Fi store. Very happy with the decision especially considering I have not owned a turntable in 10 years - easy to use and sounds great. You can have the P1 running out of the box within 10 minutes.

I thought the P2 was short for Planer 2?

Either way my mind is made up. I want a new Rega P1 for my first table.

As for upgrade paths.. I am not really to worried about it. If I get a new P1 and really like the sound of vinyl and decide I want to pursue it further. I will just sell the P1 and go to something high end. Something like a VPI Scout or better...

I just want to get my feet wet and go from there.:)

See... That sounds great and is just what I am looking for. Something easy.

I have never even heard a record let alone owned a turn table.:D

My dad just gave me some minty vinyl he had from the 70's. The covers aren't very minty but the records are perfect.

Some of the record covers say original master recording on them.Whats that mean?

Are you talking about the planer 2 or the P1?

I did plan to upgrade the platter on the P1 after I got it. But thats about it.

Any Rega will benefit, it was originally on my P-25, I have the stuff in cabinet if you get a table let me know and I will cut you a deal of at least half off a new one, the platter with the mat is especially nice nikolas.

Last year I acquired a Rega P1, glass platter and Rega Elys 2 cartridge. It sounds great. But, as with many P1 owners, the upgrade bug has bit me and I'm will be soon looking for a VPI Scout or Scoutmaster. I probably pursue that after I put a few hours of listening time on what I have now.

This cracks me up. It doesn't seem like anyone around here can mention a TT upgrade without bringing up the Scout. Kinda like sub upgrades and SVS.

As much talk as I hear about them I sometimes wish I had held out a little longer before purchasing my MMF-7. Because now everyone I talk to says the Scout wouldn't be a big enough upgrade over the Music Hall to justify spending the money.

Sometimes I wish I had never ventured into vinyl, or audio for that matter.

There is a loyal group of VPI scout owners on all chat rooms. Personally, i found it to be a bit dry sounding - a personal opinion of course. Your MMF-7 is a very nice table in the price point of $2000. Music Hall's do not do any one thing great but do alot of things good. An overall well-rounded TT. To hear an audio improvement over your MMF-7 you would probably need to spend in excess of $3500 for table alone and then in that range another $800 for cartridge. The disease is getting out of hand.
