Preamp buzz?

Carver HR 752 receiver w/ preouts acting as a pre, Carver PM-350 for an amp. When the receiver and amp are on I get a slight buzz from the speakers. With the receiver off it's dead silent. When I was using just the receiver (no stand alone amp) there was no buzz.

Any ideas? This is just slightly annoying and strange, not an emergency.

I had that problem too. You can first try this very simple thing....plug your amplifiers' power cord into an extension cord and remove the 3rd pin from the extension cord and plug it into the wall. If the buzz is gone, you have a ground loop problem.

Also unplug the CATV wire. That was an issue with mine.

Thanks Joe. I'll have to see how I've got them wired up, I may indeed have a ground loop issue. Is a GL usually quiet or loud?

    Ben,

You mean like a network cable?

The cable TV wire has gotten me in the past. It was hooked up to my TV, and my TV was hooked up to my receiver (RCA patch cable). That gave me a buzz:D

Also check your IC's between the pre and amp, I've had a bad one that caused a buzz.

Cable TV was my problem. Solved it (90%+) by using the following -

Also could have plugged CATV into my monster hts1000.

    Good luck

In my case, the ground loop would get louder the longer the system was on....to a certain point of course.

A ground loop sounds like a 60 cycle hum because that's what it is. It could be fairly loud or it could be softer, but it won't change volume on it's own.
