Off On another Northern Adventure

Well I am off on another venture North when I fly on this coming Monday from Yellowknife to Iqaluit (capital of Nunavut) for another mining show in the North. I have been to Iqaluit before, but this time there is something special. There is a large Iron Ore Project being developed south of Pond Inlet (located at the northeastern end of Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic) and the mining company is flying me in next Tuesday to access future Communication Solutions. I have been above the Arctic Circle before, but this will be the highest one for me. It is at 72°41' North and 77°58' West, 400miles above the Arctic Circle.

It will preempt the show somewhat for me, but some of my colleagues have agreed to watch the show for a couple of days while I head future north looking for business and do a little sight seeing. I owe them BIG TIME. This is not for everyone, but I just love exploring areas that I have never been before. I have been very fortunate in my career to have explored so much of Canada and other countries. Later.
Michael ;)

Not too bad for this time of year. The rule for boarding the aircraft going into the Mine is, "No Arctic Gear, No fly on the plane." Sounds about right to me.

200 years from now the Discovery Channel will have a show to try and determine WTF is that and what was the ancient symbolic meaning! You better inscribe it with 1) we listen to music, 2) on the hi-fi :)

    Those pictures are AWESOME

Stay safe....can you carry a weapon while close to the polar bears ? I would HATE to have to kill one, but if its down to either him or you...its not a hard choice.

I honestly do not know how you put up with the cold, no FRIGID temperatures. I turn into a wuss when the temp goes below 60. -25? Holy Moly!

Not for me. Definitely. I hope they pay you well.

I loathe the heat as much, if not more, than you detest the cold. -25 is not cold. This winter we had -63C (with wind chill), which is -81.4F. Now that's COLD! It's what you are used to.

Well, made it back safe and sound from the trip way up North. Absolutely beautiful. I have included a few shots including my overnight accommodations in -30C temp. Yes it was heated, but I shut it off at midnight as it was too darn hot. Another trip is planned for the July timeframe so it will be nice to see the same area in summer conditions. This is what I now consider to be extreme remoteness.
No Polar Bears, but we were warmed that one had been spotted 2 days before our arrival at camp. As well, we landed in a small community called Clyde River to refuel going back to Iqaluit. We ventured out behind the tiny airport and a local called out to us not to venture too far as we may be part of the lunch menu if not careful.
