ps3 help

Ok, I just got a PS3. Was setting everything up, going smooth, when I went to try and do a system update. Started doing it over the wireless network, but I canceled it because I figured downloading on my pc to a flash drive would be quicker. So I canceled it out and powered down.
Went to my pc and downloaded the update to a flash drive. Went back to the PS3 and now its a brick. Black screen on boot.... nothing. Even unplugged the power cord for 10 minutes for a hard reset. Still nothing.
Am I hosed? Can I take out the hard drive and reformat on a PC? Would that even help?

I doubt that would help - most devices like that don't keep the firmware on the hard drive but rather some internal flash drive.
Have you tried the "factory reset" of holding the power button for five seconds when you turn the thing on?If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
well, now I at least get the little sound at startup and the pink screen over a composite hookup. No menu though and it doesn't seem to respond to hooking up the controller, lights keep flashing on the controller.

ahh crap. now its back to only the black screen -- no sound. Guess I'll just have to return/exchange it.

you might have turned it off while it was updating. that could screw it up7.1 HOME THEATER:

Yep, that's the only time there is a danger of messing it up. If it was just uploading and you turn it off, no harm done as any properly designed device would finish the download, check that checksum on the new firmware matches and only then update.
If he turned it off while updating, the firmware on that device might be corrupted and Sony might have to reprogram the firmware ROM. -
I'd just like to point out that for a modern device to even have the possibility of bricking is absolutely lazy and ridiculous, and the fact that SO MANY consumer devices that allow firmware upgrades have this problem is MIND boggling to me.
It's very simple to have a redundant firmware image built into the design so in the event of failure or power interruption during burning you can revert to a known working fallback. If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
I agree, vital functions should not be upgradeable (I don't see why they would need to be). I don't know how the upgrade is designed on PS3 so I changed the wording on my previous post, but all the signs point to a corrupted firmware.
