LSi9 and Target Stands

For my newly acquired LSi9's, I decided to purchase a pair of Target MR28 speaker stands. But now I am having second thoughts about this purchase. I am wondering if I should have gone with the Target HR70 stands instead.

The underside of LSi9 is 8x15, weighs about 32lbs each
Target MR28 is a 4 post stand (4 columns 2x2), top plate is 6x6 (although from Target's own webpage, it looks like the top plate is actually 6x8, I don't know if this is a misprint on Audioadvisor's part), bottom plate is 9x10, each stand weighs about 32lbs.
Target HR70 is a 2 post stand (2 columns 4x2), top plate is 6x8.5, bottom plate is 10x12, each stand weighs about 25lbs.

The only reason why I went with the MR28 is because the MR28 is the top of the line Target stand, while the HR70 is not.

But seeing that the bottom plate on the HR70 is about a third larger than the bottom plate of the MR28, I am wondering, given the LSi9's large size, 8x15, would the HR70 provide more stability to the LSi9's resting on top of the stands?

What do you guys think?

The base on the Sanus steel foundation stands is about 11x14. Does it feel stable to you?

25 lbs of #6 lead shot in the uprights of each stand, yep they're sturdy!

Maybe I went a little overboard with the Target MR28 stands. Oh well, you win some you lose some, after all, I did get a great deal on those LSi9's.

dkg999, how do you manage to rest the LSi9's on top of the top plate? Your top plate is about 6"x8".

I just use the points that come with the stands, and set them on there. I hang more front-to-back excess off the back end so the main weight of the drivers is closer to resting on the top plate. I've never had a problem. You don't need or necessarily want a top plate on the stand that's the same size as the bottom of your speaker. A duck decoy setting on top of each LSi9 serves as an anti-cat device, and I'm good to go!

damn, those are some beefy **** stands. base plate shmase plate, those things will be fine. definitly fill em with sand.....HUGE difference.

overkill? yeah, probably, but stable as hell if there rated to handle 200 lbs filled. those will be the last stands you'll ever buy..LOL

Well, at least now I am permanently done with upgrading speaker stands for a while. :) And no, I don't have any pets right now, so I just need to be careful of myself not to bump into those stands.

dkg999, with your LSi9's resting on the small top plate, do you feel that the small top plate is putting too much pressure on that small area under the speakers? Will it damage the speakers?

There's only 4 small areas of contact when using the points in the top base of the stand. You will get 4 small nicks in the bottom of your speaker, and more or scratches if you try to move them around. I took a file and smoothed the points so that they would do less marking of the bottom of the speaker.

I don't like to scratch the bottom of my speakers.

Maybe I should head over to Staples and get some of those sticky clay, cover up those sharp points on the top plate, and put a nice big thick piece in the middle, so the bottom of the speaker is glued to the middle of the top plate.

use one of these vinyl condoms over the 4 screws and it should stop it from gouging up the base of speaker

    6906.jpg

the other way is to sticking pennies to the bottom of the speaker that go between speaker/screw

I've got the Target MR24's for my 902i's and the overall effect very good. I haven't filled them with sand or shot, as I move them on a regular basis. I've sticky tack between the speakers and stands. This style has basically been a reference for several years, so I think you made a good decision for the 9's.

Another fellow Target MR user!:D I thought I must have been mad to spend $300 on a pair of stands, since I seemed to be the only one who did it.

So what kind of sticky tack are you using? I tried to find the famous blu tac, but doesn't seem like anyone is carrying them.

I think Staples sells some poster sticky clay. Is that good enough?

And are your stands stable? I still haven't assembled mine yet. I am a bit concerned about stability, since the base plate is only 9x10. And do you find the top plate a bit on the small side? The top plate is 6x8.

They seem very stable, and I've had two toddlers bumping into them for 16 months now. I am using the stuff from staples, as I couldn't find the blu-tac either. When I say that I move them around on a regular basis, I mean they are moved 1-2 feet three or four times a week. They have never fallen over, and the tack has stabilized the speakers the whole time.
