Metal Detectors - which one?

So I come to Club Polk where there are experts on just about everything :p

The kids and I do a lot of metal dectecting around the farm and local area during the summer. It's something my 11 and 12 yr old girls just seem to love to do, they call it there treasure hunting adventures. We have a lot of old farmsteads and communities along an early 1800's stage coach road that runs through part of the farm, so we do find some interesting things! The older Radio Shack metal detector has been taken over by their older sister, so I'm looking for a new metal detector. I don't need top of the line, but do want something with good depth range, and that can discriminate between metals well. I would be looking in the $250 to $500 range.

Anyone have any experience, recommendations?

Bring it to Polkfest, we'll hike our pants up to our armpits and go for a walk in the woods to look for treasure.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Hobby Haven in Des Moines recently started carrying a line of good metal detectors. All I know is they start around $150 and get as high as $900+. I don't know a lot about them, but I'm sure the guys there will have some good advise. If you want I could get some details from them. I'll likely be in their in the next day or two anyway.

cmy330go - thanks! I didn't know they were carrying them. I stop in there every once in a while. I know the owner from my past as a manager of another area hobby shop while I was in college and my past involvement in model trains. I'll put that on my to-do list for the next time I'm in town!

Actually it was one of the original owners of Hobby Haven, back in the late 70's early '80's - Dave Harvey. I managed the hobby and craft shops on main street in Ames. Dave was my United Models distributor rep at that time before he took back Hobby Haven from someone he had sold it to.

That name is familiar, but I'm not sure if I know him. I'm assuming he is the one that sold it to John, who has now sold it to Rick and Brian. I guess I didn't realize it had changed hands that many times.

Well I guess I got my history lesson for the day.
