Ok. yeah I'll admit back in the 80's, abut 20 or so years ago.. i was semi hooked on the PSB's. But for the most part they were a victim of the late 80's when music turned from dance, synth pop to grunge.
So i'm watching TV and i run into a hour long documentary on the Pet Shop Boys and i watch it with interest. I want to know why they dropped out of the music scene in the late 80's or early 90's.
I guess grunge music overtook them.. and radio stations were no longer willing to play their hits.. in effect ending their career.
the doc was decent. I had no idea they were such good song writers. i guess I never paid that much attention to their music since it was mostly dance / club oriented. Critics blew them off as nothing more than dance club hit makers. Interestingly though some of those critics reversed what they wrote some years later.. and gave them some praise instead for their song writing abilities.
Now 20 years later, I'm finding myself once again wanting to explore some of their music. Call me silly, but the 80's music scene was an important part of my growing up. The PSB's are the fourth most successful dance club musician's in the world.. only Madonna, Donna Summer and one other group have had more hits then they did.
Anyone else finding themselves going back and rediscovering a favorite band or group now?

PSB is one of my favorite bands and I regulary spin "Please" on CD (there's a copy of the LP floating somewhere around here if I bother to get off my arse and go get it). Yeah, they lost out to grunge and went "underground". My other favorite duo is Erasure but one can only take so much dance/syntho at one sitting.danger boy wrote: »Call me silly, but the 80's music scene was an important part of my growing up.
Ditto. It was a great time with the start of MTV and VH1, loads of terrible music videos, tons of great one hit wonders, and the emergence of CD. I know I'll get a flogging for the CD comment but man did I hate cassette tapes.danger boy wrote: »Anyone else finding themselves going back and rediscovering a favorite band or group now?
Not favorites but I've been going back and listening to 80's rock and hard rock bands since I was mostly listening to New Wave and Pop back then. -

Thompson Twins "Hold Me Now"
Real Life "Send Me an Angel"
Haircut One Hundred "Love Plus One"
A Flock of Seagulls "Telecommunication" or "Space Age Love Song" ("I Ran" got overplayed, bleh!)
Dexys Midnight Runners "Come on Eileen"
Big Country "In a Big Country"
The Kinks "Come Dancing"
Gary Numan "Cars"
Adam Ant "Goody Two Shoes" (Mostly because I would have traded my left nut for the girl in the video)
etc, etc, etc -
PSBs were awesome. I still listen to them almost daily on my ipod and they were one of my top two groups up until about a year ago. Unfortunately their music is aging. Behavior is probably my favorite album of theirs. Depeche Mode is the other group. They have made so many albums over the years and what keeps them popular, I think, is that they seem to adapt with the times and even though each album may have a different sound to it, the songs within the album will be consistent with the theme of the album. Is there anyone on this forum that likes/liked Modern Talking?

I love Brother Louie and You're My Heart, You're My Soul. I used to listen to them along with CC Catch, Sandra, Bad Boys Blue, and Silent Circle. A handful of relatives own that type of music and I've been meaning to "borrow" some CD's.
Now, if I can only find Man 2 Man meets Man Parrish CD... -
Thompson Twins have tons of good songs too.
As well as already mentioned Erasure, Depeche Mode, THE Fixx, plus Crowded House, General Public, Howard Jones, Modern English, Soft Cell, Haircut 100, Psychedelic Furs, Gary Numan, David Bowie, Thomas Dolby, INXS, Duran Duran, Bronski Beat, Naked Eyes, OMD, The Smiths, and who could forget A Flock of Seagulls?PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

I have a lot PSB music. Don't listen to it too much anymore. But back in the late 80's early 90's I was a fan. On a similar note Yazoo is doing a small tour of the states this summer. I would love to go see them for old time sake."Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. Measurements can provide a measure of insight, but are no substitute for human judgment. Why are we looking to reduce a subjective experience to objective criteria anyway? Love the Pet Shop, got most of their stuff and still listen to it today. The lead, Neil Tennant did a duet with Kylie Minogue which is a fantastic song.
So many great bands from the 80's, too many to list. I have yet to see a decade as good as the 80's.If...
Ron dislikes a film = go out and buy it.
Ron loves a film = don't even rent. -

Somehow, the thought of Carl "getting his groove on" to 80's band dance mixes just doesn't work for me."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

About 5 years ago, I went to a PSB concert here in San Francisco @ the Warfield Theater. The place was packed and it was non-stop dancing by the audience during the entire show. You guys really have to see these guys live in concert.
My Japanese first-pressing CD of PSB's "Please"
Thompson Twins remastered CD have just been released. -
...."West End Girls"
One of my all time favorite 80's tunes.

I actually enjoyed their greatest hits album, but no I do not own it (borrowed and returned without ripping). -

Never been to a PSB concert although I've been to Erasure and it was non-stop dancing, too. That was a fun concert.
Great CD and thanks for the headsup on Thompson Twins. I hope "remastered" doesn't mean thin, lacking dynamic range. -

Cool tune, even if they do have a lissssp.~ In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence. ~
