Orig. XP Pro & other concerns

I'm getting ready to build an HTPC, and want to use an old copy of XP Pro from an old custom built pc from 5 years ago.
My question: Will an non-updated version 'see' the hardware long enough to for me to load the drivers, get SP2, etc?
Attached is the shopping list of components off Neweeg. The BRD/ HD dvdp combo drive probably won't be staying.:(

Without a doubt it will work and get your computer online. Install all your hardware drivers first, then do the SP2 upgrade.

I guess it doesn't really matter, but I like having all the drivers installed first.

I don't remember exactly what it was, but the last machine I built (about 2 years ago) required SP2 in order to install correctly. It was possibly the Raid, or maybe something with the video card, I just don't remember. But I had to slipstream a SP2 CD in order to install XP.

Thanks BL! Yeah, I plan on loading the OS 1st, then the drivers, then updates. I was just concerned that the older software wouldn't read the hardware.
I'll probably be humping your ear for tech support when I go to light off:D

Now get back to studying so you can get your pigskin...er, sheepskin,...whatever it's called

Dang, that seems a bit like overkill for a HTPC! Should be sweet, though.

    Have fun with it!

    Obieone....

The original version of XP will not recognize large hard-drives. I think it is limited to 250G or so for the C:\. There are some very confusing work-around's for this issue... but, a modern hard-drive will format... but, it won't format to its full capability. So, you'll have to partition the hard-drive and that may or may not be ok for you. Personally, I dislike partitioned hard-drives but, I've learned to live with the compromise.

One thing that you can do is pay Microsoft for a replacement XP Cd (claiming yours was damaged) and it will come with SP2 already imbedded. That's a reasonable fix as well but, I think it will set you back $35 or so.

Good luck with the new puter project.

You should break up the hard drive anyways partition wise it makes backups easier and safer in the wake a of a breakdown.

With my limited experience, I don't lke partitions, because when I want to reformat, I only can reformat from that partition on. I want to be able to 'wipe' the HDD when reformatting. I'm sure I'm not explaining it correctly, but that's the experience I had when I wanted to format my last custom pc.

Is it 64bit? If not you have no reason for 4GB RAM, 32 bit can only see 4GB TOTAL - this includes video memory etc.

Just to clarify, XP 32 can only see 3 gigs of memory on the mobo.

I thought there was a patch? Maybe that's just Vista...
