Ask the surgoen how many stapedectomys he or she has done.

The more the better for you.

Absolutely, and at what success rate... I think I will opt with the surgeon that my co-worker went to, he's one of the leaders in that field in this country.

I'll be keeping you in my prayers, Sami. Sounds like the odds are pretty good that your hearing will be restored. That's awesome!

I'm looking at the audiogram and it's not actually as bad as 30dB, it's SRT30 which means I can hear most of the tones at 30dB. SRT20 and below are normal hearing levels, and after reading about the surgery, some people have gone from SRT60 and above to close to normal range.

Right ear is in great shape, SRT10 rating but most of the tones I could hear around 5dB.

    It's all right Danny! :)

Hard to measure SPL from cans, especially with something like the RadioShack SPL meter. Why do you want to do it, if you don't mind me asking? To measure hearing?

I think he is trying to relate the headphone volume to regular speaker volume.

Best way to avoid hearing damage with headphones is to keep the volume down. If you think it is loud you are right.

Do a side by side. Play your home stereo at say 90db and then try to match that sound with your Cans.

Pretty much is mono right now, 30dB is quite a lot.

Steve, what did the docs say about it? You went through all the tests? Weber test was quite revealing. Simple test too:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weber_test

They just said "substantial hearing loss in your left ear.." They gave me a copy of the print out showing the dB's necessary for me to hear certain tones, but I don't know what I did with it.

So Sammi, how did the surgery turn out? Hope everything went well.

Did the surgeon tell you how you got it? Was it due to trauma? It probably wasn't due to loud music because then the hearing damage would have been neuronal not physical. Hearing, especially unilateral hearing loss, usually indicates an underlying pathophysiological process. Although that would be more true in cases of neuronal hearing loss. But nevertheless it is a good idea to talk to the surgeon to find out what else might be possibly wrong.

Let us know how your hearing now after the surgery.

Out of surgery and back home. Dizzy, dizzy, dizzy. Morphine, and that wonderful feeling it brings, is wearing off. Now I get to boss my wife around, love it, but unfortunately that's going to turn the other way (i.e. back to normal) in a few days. I'll enjoy it while I can.

Progress report, Sami. How did your weekend go? Are you getting better or are you still doped up and not lucid enough to comment?

    Hope you're healing well.

Slept most of the weekend, got some happy pills (codeine most likely, haven't checked) from the doc. Went to work yesterday, it was ok but I still was on my pills. 1st day was ok, then hearing was gone as expected, and balance too. Cleared out the blood from my ear canal yesterday so I can hear a little better, there's still gel in there I think. Friday is follow up, I'll know more then.
