REALLY DUMB Wiring Question

After stripping the some speaker wire, I noticed a plastic 'thread' - should I cut this off? or is it intentional (didn't look like an accidental strand as it seemed to be a perfectly formed diameter)

I've never noticed this in any other wire I've stripped (its some some basic 14g Monster only brand available in my local store)

just cut it it is used to strip the wire pull the string towards the wire away from the cut portion and it will expose the wire more.

Yes, cut it off. It's just used to help to strip the wire away, I always cut it off.

And you wonder why a lot of people don't like Monster; their stuff is always more expensive and complicated than it has to be.

There are two kinds of "plastic" thread xandra could be referring to.
1.) The fiber thread that is usually just under the outer jacket, and usually only in wire meant to be run in walls or plenum spaces.
As Montoya said-this would be used to expose more of the indivudually insulated wires.

2.) The plastic 'thread' within an individual wire in the center, surrounded by the copper.
This is Monster's Magentic Flux Tube, as they mention any chance they get. I am sure other manufacturers probably have something similar.

Anyway, if your wire is Monster (XP?), and #2 is correct, I just cut it off. If anything I would imagine that it would cause a problem with a good conductive contact with a peice of plastic in the way.

3.) Same as #2, except when the technology is finally released, you will connect the plastic thread to a Flux Capacitor-which is used to aid in time travel. Consider it looking ahead-if you want to future proof your home... ;)

    mmadden:
Thanks! That ("Magnetic Flux Tube") is actually printed on the jacket (tho they couldn't seem to bother printing the guage).
I can now attach my nanners in peace.
