Capacitor girl says , the capacitors in old sound equipment oftentimes become leaky. This does not mean something is leaking out of them (although sometimes this is true) it means that direct current is leaking through the capacitor , in other words the capacitor is acting as if it had a resistor in parallel with it .

The job of a capacitor in most circuits is to block DC current and to pass only the audio or AC signal. Old capacitors become leaky because of breakdown in their chemical composition, age, and other factors.

Old capacitors also decrease in value. This doesn't mean they're not worth as much money . It means the capacitor is no longer able to pass the audio signal as well as it should . In other words a capacitor rated at 10uf may now be less than 5uf. Capacitor girl says when replacing old capacitors always replace with capacitors with the equal or greater voltage ratings . Usually the higher the voltage rating the better. But be aware , the physical size of the capacitor is also important . Smaller is better , a large capacitor has a large surface area and can induce more hum and noise into the circuit .

We do capacitor upgrades for vintage power amplifiers, preamps and receivers tube type and transistor. Please send email with your specific needs.
