Just got my Adcom GFA 555...

Just got my amp via fedex, and its like christmas all over again!

Do i just set it up and play, or do I need to let the amp power on for a bit to get the capicitors warm?

Also, is there a way to tell if the amp is putting out 200 watts/ channel?

    Just played some smashing pumpkins and some various music on comcast's music channels. The volume isnt much louder than before, BUT i have never seen my woofers on my towers move like that!!!

    Yea its much more fuller. Just wish it was louder.

    But cant complain too much since I got it for a great price...

    Well you should be able to go louder. About the time the HK goes into clipping you now have 6dbs more headroom. Take it up 3 more dbs and you're running around 100w. That should be plenty loud :).

    Pop a hot source like a CD on that baby, and you won't get that far with your knob action. Comcast digital music is very low level from the box out.

    already tried that... played dave matthews and smashing pumpkins...

    kept turning the knob until the distortion indicator started flickering around -6db, but that is typical when playing music loud according to the amp manual.

    What made you think it would be so much louder? Thats really not what amps do.Amps will feed your speakers the current not available from your run of the mill AVR,thus bringing out more detail,bass,dynamics.Maybe upgrade the speakers if you want louder.

    i thought it would be louder as I have compared listening to a receiver when it was playing the same track with and without an amplifier at a local store. When the receiver was running with an amp it was louder and fuller in sound.

    So i thought it would be the same if i added an amp to my system...

    That's most likely a gain offset. Once you calibrate your speakers the MV gain on the pre should be a constant in scale. You should be able to drive your 10s louder than before, with no distortion, without clipping. Other than the SQ benefits, that's what you get.

    I will play around with the settings on the H/K, plus do some speaker placement.

    I will admit that the fuller sound and increased SQ is amazing!

    Right now Im watchin Independence Day...
