Infinity Overture 3 vs RTi8

Ok,

I just bought a subwoofer from a nice lady off of Craigslist, a Velodyne CT-150. Great sub, great sub.

Now, she has these Infinity Overture 3 tower speakers for sale. She is wanting between 700 and 900 for the pair. I have read a small amount of things about them, all good...real good.

Is it worth it to spend upwards of $500 (after selling RTi8s) to get these speakers?

That's a lot of money, but I do think the RTi8's are a bit harsh on the high end. Currently they are hooked up to an Onkyo R530 (somewhat ok 7.1 "100watts x 7") and the room is somewhat acoustically treated (first reflection points on ceiling, wall, and floor). I am still looking into speaker placement, every day I come home and move them so maybe I'll find a spot where they are great...

But I am tempted by the Overture 3.

I really do like them. Image decent with dynamic punch. Low overhang deep bass. A solid lovely cabinet. The Bash 175 is a little under powered but will carry the traits of the partnering amp feeding them. They sound best with dedicated wall sockets and mate well to 100-150 watt bipolar output amps well.
Down side is they're old, and the grill pins are like glass.

What should tempt you is upgrading that receiver.Find a warmer sounding one like a HK or B&k,and some copper I/C's to tame those highs. To me the Infinity will also be harsh on the highs with that AVR.

You are right about the receiver - it's the oldest piece of equipment in my system.

And by copper I/C do you mean copper speaker wire with copper banana plugs?

I am running your standard 16 gauge wire brought to you by RCA (no banana plugs either )

But, I will upgrade the receiver - my question is, the HK and B&K receivers I've seen seem to have "low" power ratings and I am wondering if these are still going to be enough to properly push the speakers (without spending mucho money on more power from the same company).

Any reccomendations on a receiver (please, please, please under $500) would be much appreciated.

    Thanks for the input.

Look at a used HK,though they rate their power more accurately than most. 70 WATTS in a HK is way more than 100 in the one you have. You should try a cheap 12 ga copper wire like from home depot, and maybe some signal cable I/C's to start. There was a few other good brands in our for sale section for cheap that may also work for you. What do you have the crossover set at? What are you useing to spin cd's in? Your source may also have something to do with it.

I am using an 80Hz crossover, sometimes I mess around with 100, but usually 80.

The room has acoustic absorption on the side walls directly beside the speakers past the first reflection point. There is also absorption on the ceiling first reflection points.

Other than that they are pulled out about a foot from the sides of the wall and about 2.5 feet from the rear walls (center of midrange driver to wall).

I sit at reccomened 38% room length to the rear, which also helps with the projector...forgot to mention that 100" screen in between the speakers in this not so large 10' wide x 15' deep x 8' ceiling room.

And the source is my Toshiba HD-A2C.

Some have said the RTI line is a bit harsh on the high end,but to me it is more a system synergy thing, matching the right gear with them. That toshiba is not the best choice to spin cd's either.Try a dedicated player. In my opinion, changeing out speakers with the same gear you have will yield little results.Think about upgrading some gear first.
