Interesting finding! The ultimate $400 pair of speakers
I was in the process of building a simple music only setup in my spare/workout/hangout room when I decided on a pair of monitor 50's mostly for the price that I got new for $200 shipped, shortly after I found some vintage monitor 7 speakers that i though I would never find so I had to jump on them thinking I would sell my 50's for at least what I paid for them. Well I got both of them in this week and I must say, maybe it's just my taste but, I think the 50's have the slightest edge over the 7's. The 50's are just the slightest bit on the bright side but the 7's are nice highs but a somewhat muddy mid, bass on both are good but the 50's had a slight edge. Then I decided to put a 7 and a 50 next to each other and thats when the magic happened! A 50 and a 7 together are the BOMB! Since they were very similar to begin with they matched each others weaknesses to make a perfect sound. I have them running off my multi room pair so I only have one of each on. I'm looking for a dedicated receiver so I can have a 50,7 pair at both corners of my room. Total I spent $400 for all 4 I can't possible see how anything could sound better and if it could I guarantee it will be a whole hell of a lot more than $400! Plus a 50 next to a 7 looks sweet too!

I experienced a possibly similar effect with R50's and RTi6's. See here:

Honestly I can't say if this sound is "better" since I am still a beginner in this hobby. I found position to also be key. If I place the RTi6's on top of the 50's (upside down or right side up) then it doesn't sound as good. I have the 6's on stands at a height similar as if they were on top of the 50's, and they are placed about 2 feet on the outside of the 50's. The 50's are about 10 feet apart. It seems to me as if sounds are coming from four different speakers, but the pair is getting the same stereo signal. Someday I will get better fronts and compare.
There are a few other threads that talk about dual fronts but they tend to focus on using similar speakers.
