some people say to stay awake till you get accoustomed to the local time..

other people say.. take a hour or two nap.

some people say.. start the party as soon as you get off the plane... :D

what remedy works for you?

taking a nap, then eating a nice filling meal, always has worked for me. :)

Jet lag, also jetlag or jet-lag, is a physiological condition which is a consequence of alterations to the circadian rhythm. Such disturbances result from shift work, daylight saving time, altered day length, or as the name implies, transmeridian travel as on a jet plane. They are known as desynchronosis, dysrhythmia, dyschrony, jet lag, or jet syndrome. The condition is generally believed to be the result of disruption of the "light/dark" cycle that entrains the body's circadian rhythm. It can be exacerbated by environmental factors.

The condition of jet lag may last many days, and medical experts have deemed that a recovery rate of "one day per time zone" is a fair guideline.[citation needed] Good sleep hygiene promotes rapid recovery from jet lag: in fact sleep, relaxation, moderate exercise, and sensible diet seem to be the simplest recovery methods.

However, since the experience of jet lag varies among individuals, it is difficult to assess the efficacy of any single remedy. Age may also be a factor on the severity of jet lag, as younger people will suffer worse jet lag than older people would[1].

Women are more susceptible to jet lag than are men[2] this is in part because estrogen is often vulnerable to jet lag-like conditions[3].

Most chemical and herbal remedies, including the hormone melatonin, have not been tested nor approved by official agencies such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Depends on which direction I'm going. Normally, I force myself to stay up until at least 9PM local time, take some melatonin and go to sleep, usually fine the next day. I also won't go to sleep if it after 8AM at the local time that I'm going to, this helps as well, assuming you can stay up for 36 hrs or so...
There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.-Menkin

A recent study in hamsters showed that sildenafil (also known as Viagra) aided in a 50% faster recovery from shifts comparable to eastward travel experienced by humans and was effective starting at low doses.[4] However, this use has not been tested in humans and is considered an off-label use by the drug's manufacturers

Just get off the plane and fall into the normal schedule for the location you are in. Eat when they do, sleep when they do, reset your watch, just fall into the normal routine. This has been the best remedy for me.

FYI - in 2006/2007 I averaged 150,000 airline miles annually and about 120 nights per year in a hotel. I was in Russia, India, South America, Australia, and Europe on a regular basis. At some point, jetlag becomes a non-issue when pure exhaustion takes over

4-5 hours isn't much of a jet lag but after that it gets a bit difficult to deal with, especially going east. I end up staying up all night and sleeping during the day. If it is for work, no problem, I just take the nap during one of the meetings...

Coming back, no problem as I most of the time will be just going to bed early and waking up early.

Partying works wonders for it. :)

Tried them all and the only one for me is a combination of the above. I travel from EST to Germany once a year for 2 weeks. I have never truly acclimated but if I play nice and don't drink too much German Beir, I survive and sleep once I get home. Drink lots of water as well.

When I go to Europe on business, I usually take a Red Eye so I take a 3-4 hour power nap and stay low key. Go to bed around 10 pm local and the next day am fine. Sleeping pills don't hurt either :)

I don't mind the jabbing as long as its good clean fun.

You can also hang your head out the window on the landing and get that oxygen rush that dogs get from the car window.
