was just curious if anyone has any steering wheel setups they would share.

I was curious how I would mount all this stuff to make it feel (real)! like would I build a frikin cockpit out of an old office chair or something?..

I have been wondering the same thing actually. I'm not sure the woman would appreciate me just clamping it to our coffee table, and I don't think it's tall enough to be comfortable driving like that anyway.

I pondered trying to build something like the tv trays with the tall legs, but with a nice wood top so I could attach the wheel/gear shift to it. I'm no carpenter though, so I can't imagine it would turn out looking good enough to warrant being kept in the living room...

Oh yea, that Porsche wheel is SICK btw. I'd definitely have to build a cockpit for that one.

That's one of my future projects. I already have a racing seat reserved but not yet any time to start the project.

You can buy cockpit frames/seats online.

yeah they are pricey, saw a real nice one for well over a grand. here is a DIY site. http://www.geocities.com/racingcockpit/ecockpit.html looks kinda cheesy.

There are other types where you sit real low to the ground, like a go cart, that are cheaper but not as realistic as a more seated version.

I have a broken office chair in the garage, the chair itself is fine the legs and mount broke, so I basically have the chair, think im gonna bolt it to a wooden box, and fabricate something.... err I mean, have my builder friend fabricate something... LOL

Here is another DIY site, in case you needed some more ghetto inspiration. not exactly what I need since I have the audio video setup, but it gives me some ideas on what I could do. after all...im not very creative

I swear I've seen some online for around $100-200. I could be wrong though. I don't think they included the wheel tho.

This thing is $300 at Walmart (I'm still shocked they'd carry something like this). Looks like this would have everything you'd need, except of course the wheel. I don't have room for something like this in my living room, so I'm still debating the DIY route...

Buy a seat or rip one out of an old car. Weld yourself a frame (nothing too fancy). Paint it if you want to to look nice. Mount everything and your good to go. Its a good little project. My friend made one and it is AWESOME! I'm going to make one someday.

I don't really see how you could make smaller with all the necessary features.

Looks to have both seat and pedal adjustments, and a sturdy setup. I think I'm taking my BIL's Walmart employee card and go shopping...I don't think my DIY would finish anytime soon but then again, GT5 isn't out yet... :)

I'd like something I could pull up to the couch, but with a similar structure. I haven't seen anything online, so it definitely looks like a DIY project.

I don't want to have to drag the coffee table out of the room and a racing chair setup in everytime I want to drive if at all possible...

That Walmart alternative seems pretty good. For $300 you'd be hard pressed to get the steel, paint, bolts and seat. Although I'm sure it doesn't come close to a nice true racing seat (which would run you at least that much money).

Cool if you have a dedicated room for this kind of stuff, otherwise a bit of a novelty.

The problem will be the seat, although you could go with a shifter-kart seat for considerable less space. I think the Walmart solution will come apart as well but putting a seat somewhere is the problem.

thanks for the link to that wall mart piece, it actually is the best looking thing I have seen for that price. I like how the part the wheel clamps to comes out, on a very high end model (like 4k) they had a similar design for the top part but it was all thick shiny chrome tube with a huge base.. the only thing I dont like is you have to mount the joystick to the steering wheel, and I was going to fabricate something where I could reposition it like a real floor shifter.

    I contacted this company www.myhomesimulator.com
about their low end frame, completely stripped, no chair, no wires, no speakers it is 300 plus 50 shipping, but it looks a little small for me, I have a chair I can use, a nice leather office captains chair, that I was going to mount to their slider. but again, same shifter issue

then I started thinking I could build something... welding not going to happen, I was thinking all wood frame 2x4 with double monster bolts at each joint.
I started drawing up plans today, I measured the cockpit of my jeep all distances etc.
came up with a plan for a 30''x50'' footprint cockpit . the wall mart site says the specs are 26.0 x 21.0 x 15.0 but that must be the shipping box, because the unit fully extended has to be close to 50 inches.

Looks to be the same seat. All the other options are the same setups with different colours or logos. I can get 15% off from Walmart so I'll end up saving $70.

Here's an alternative for the coffee table. I have something similar from Big Lots that cost like $200.

Placed my order on one of those Playseat Evolution's. Walmart was out of stock but Amazon had them for $299 with free shipping. There was the original for $50 less but they have a problem with stability so I passed on them.

I'll let you guys know how it is.

I have got Logitech G25 wheel that I am using with an Ikea bought cheap end table and a gaming chair. working well so for, my only issue is that end table is 3 legged and wiggle a little sometimes.

I have heard playseat center column also wiggles a little. Sami let us know how you liked it.

That's the PlaySeat Classic which has pedal before the centre column, the Evolution has the column before the pedals. If you compare these two pictures you will see the difference. That was the reason why I paid the extra $50 for the Evolution model, no point of "saving" money and then deal with a problem like that.
