Due the the research and advice from this site, I have purchased the following:
(3) TC265I for LCR
(4) TC615I for surrounds
Onkyo TX-SR705 receiver

This will be for a dedicated HT (little music). I need to get a sub, however I have already blew my budget on the items above. I have noticed good pricings for the subs below...but a bit wary as they are a bit cheap. Is the PSW10 any good? How about the JBL and Sony? Any recommendations for low cost subs?

Polk PSW10 - 10" for $105
JBL Sub12 - 12" for about $200
Sony - 12" for about $200

Thanks,

I would live without the sub until you can increase your budget a little. Since inwalls suggest you don't want speakers out in the open, I would seriously wait for the new Polk DSW micro-subs to be released.

Okay....I guess there are not any fans of the PSW10 or JBL Sub 12 here. Do you think the PSW10 or the JBL can hold me over until I can get a better one or are they a complete waste?

the Polk PSW10 will do you ok for a while. I started out with a small sub for a year before replacing it.. remember though, they have their limits.. but it will hold you for a while.

What about a DIY sub? It can be one of the best values in subwoofers. Plus, you can custom built it to fit any where or look like anything.

The Dayton sub kits from Parts Express used to be favorably discussed as a good entry level sub. Not sure if they still are. I'm with CFrizz, I would start saving and get one of the Polk DSW line of subs.

I have seen the entry level Polk subs go for under $100 on eBay, so that might be a good temporary option. Unfortunately, I think any of the subs you are looking at will just leaving you wanting more.

Okay guys...Will it be better if I move to the entry level HSU or Elemental Designs? I hear these mentioned on the site quite often. I guess if the entry level HSU or ED is on par with the PSW10 then it does not matter. I can also see VELODYNE VRP1000 for $200..is this any good? Basically I am trying to get a respectable sub at about 200-300 max. (and the $300 is going to cost me a tremendous amount of "honey doos"). I think I have done well with the TC265 as LCR and TC615 as surrounds...I hate to blow it with a poor sub selection.
    Thanks,

Entry level HSU would be good. You might also check the Outlaw Audio subs which are rebranded HSU designs.

If you're looking for a hold over sub, then the little Velo will be tuneful, but not really enough for more than a small room. A buddy did a review on the Cadence CSX 12 in his large room. It's $299 shipped, but they offer coupons. It's quite a little powerhouse for a budget sub and is very clean. It will fill most rooms with exceptional SQ for the money. The little Hsu will likely sound a bit better, but won't fill the room as easily. The eD subs are waaaaaayyyy backordered, but are a step up from the CSX 12 in extention, if not SPL.

    Combo rig:

Onkyo NR1007 pre-pro, Carver TFM 45(fronts), Carver TFM 35 (surrounds)
    SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B
    PB13Ultra RO
    BW Silvers
    Oppo BDP-83SE

Why buy twice when you can excercise a little patience & get something truly worth having for more money once?

Then you won't be stuck with an sub that you then have to find a way to get rid of or another use for. And the money you have put aside now will go towards what you really want to get.

You will survive the temporary lack of a sub until you get what you really want.

The DSW's are available now, just wait & continue saving.

Save your $ hold out for something better. Continue to read as much as possible. Me personally votes for HSU, but av123 has a highly rated $500 sub, SVS gets good reviews as does Outlaw

    Patience??? Whats that?

If your like me you can not wait untill the money is saved. IMO listen to what advice these guys and gals give you on a cheap entry level sub and buy it to hold you over.

When your ready to buy the one you want, sell the current one to try and regain some money on it. Thats what I do and usually come pretty close to getting mostly what I paid back.

If he thinks that the "Honey Do" list is going to be long by buying a cheap POS of a sub, It's going to be through the roof & in outer space when she sees him getting rid of said POS to replace with what he should have waited & saved & gotten the first time around!

Do it 1 time & do it right, because in the end you SAVE money!

Nikolas, you slit your own throat and destroyed your method of operation with this statement alone.

"When your ready to buy the one you want, sell the current one to try and regain some money on it. Thats what I do and usually come pretty close to getting mostly what I paid back."

For me & most women, USUALLY is NOT good enough. What you don't get back has been wasted all because you were in a great big hurry to get NOWHERE!

The subwoofers are not going anywhere, take your time, save more money & do it right the first time!

What is so damn incomprehensible about that statement?

Thanks Dangerboy for the PM. Also thanks to all the members for their advice. I am still not sure which way to go...I will continue to do research. I am leaning toward increasing the budget and get the HSU VTF-1 for 399 + shipping. The SVS are bit more expensive and the ED have long leadtimes. Based on the HSU reviews this sub should do my TC265 (LCR) and TC615(surrounds) justice. ( I really hope so)

Taking a little bit of a loss to me is OK provided I got a decent amount of enjoyment out of the piece of gear I was using.

If I bought the gear and it was crap and I got no enjoyment out of it and lost money. Well.... Thats a different story.

I also don't have WAF to worry about either. So that may make a difference also.

Either way. It was a just an opinion on one way of doing it.

Good luck with your sub purcahse by the way.:)

This is a HUGE caveat that you should have included while giving advice to a married man! What you can do with your own money & what a married person can do in a shared household are 2 very different things!:)

Im kinda in the same boat....

I Have the 5, just need the .1. Well actually i kinda have a .1 its an old yamaha sub from an HTIB...But of course i need to replace it.

anyway, Im seriously looking as the Velodyne Dls3750R since I like the DPS serious but people said the 3750 is very nice...and would be great for gaming and movies.

I think thats the way im going...I love my Polk speakers but I have never really been a fan of their subs...and for the love of god stay away from the sony subs.
