Just curious... which would be better?

I've been reading a fair amount about how good adding either a second sub to smooth our frequency response in your room. It seems using an eq like the velodyne sms-1 also helps out a lot.
So, assuming you could do one or the other, which upgrade option would give you more bang for the buck -- assuming the second SW costs the same as the sms-1.

how big is your room? and what's your current sub capable of ?
i'm all for using only one sub.. but that's just me.. two subs just take up to much room in my case and it could never work. if you room is huge and one sub won't make it happen.. then look into upgrading your current sub over using two of them. that's what I would do .PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

Well, I don't have a sub yet. I'm going to get either a Castle or dual MFW-15s. Both should be more than enough for more room, which isn't too big ~ 3000 cubic feet.
I was really just wondering how beneficial a second sub is versus spending some extra $$$ on the sms, since a lot of people seem to recommend either a second sub or eq to flatten out the sub's in room frequency.Emotiva LMC pre/pro

why don't you buy Vr3MxStyler2k3's sub he has for sale? it looks huge.. and would prob fill your room with some decent thump.

Duals of the same sub can be fairly easy to integrate and the additional headroom of a pair of MFWs will really activate your room. That being said, dual MFWs will roughly equal the output of the Castle and won't play quite as deep. As we talked about before, it's a toss up. The only drawback of either option is placement. Duals take up space you might not have and a single, corner loaded, can sometimes be localized.

Thanks, Ron. Can I assume the svs-1 would help in the event the castle ended up being localized? Or would it not help in that situation at all?Emotiva LMC pre/pro

The SMS can flatten your frequency response in the LP which should help localization. What I'm talking about has more to do with the corner loading the bass. Mine is corner loaded and was detectable, but with PEQ and room correction it's mostly mitigated. If I could put the sub between my mains, I didn't have a problem, but big subs like the Ultra13 and the Castle tend to stick outmhartman29 wrote: »Thanks, Ron. . 27" is too much for my room and I think the Castle is the same depth and a little taller. My rig is corner loaded anyway, so I'm screwed without a long wall. You may have absolutely no problem.

Ron, is the PEQ on the ultra roughly equivalent to the sms-1?Emotiva LMC pre/pro

Get dual subs & spend $120 on a BFD & use that with room eq wizard. No need to spend $600 on a eq, even though the sms-1 is very user friendly.

No the Ultra PEQ is a variable single band equalizer. You can cut narrow or wide a single peak. Room correction allows you to cut room gain...something that the big subs have in spades below 30hz. The SMS is an on the fly 6 band equalizer, totally cool and user friendly. You can cut or boost variably from ~ 10hz to I can't remember, but it does audible and visual sweeps, comes with it's own mic, etc. Makes it easy to get flat in one LP, more work to get an even in room response. The BFD is very flexible and cheaper, but there's a steeper learning curve and you need a mic and laptop with compatible soundcard to run the sweeps.mhartman29 wrote: »Ron, is the PEQ on the ultra roughly equivalent to the sms-1?
