Question about my DVD/SACD player

I just got myself a DVP-NC685V for $40 (I thought it was a good price)
It came with some cables apparently for the 5.1 outputs, 3 White cables and 2 red.

Does it matter which plugs they go into? Like...my receiver (Onkyo 605) has the 5.1 in, but they have a bunch of different colors.

Also, can I just use a regular RCA cable to go from the sub output on the player to the input on the receiver? Or is there a certain type of cable I'm supposed to use?

It doesn't matter, just ensure you have the same connection(Left, Right, Center, etc) repeated on the other end.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Thanks a lot for the quick response doro.
Does the same "doesn't matter" apply to the sub cable?

I just bought Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" SACD/hybrid cd.
Listening to it now, and it sounds GREAT!
    In 2.1 at least...

I have the 6 (5 + sub) cables going from my SACD player into the 5.1 on my receiver (Onkyo 605)

However...I am getting no sound out of my center or surround speakers. Is it something I'm doing? Is it a problem with the receiver not being able to handle SACDs?

    I'm just really confused.

SACD player is a Sony DVP-NC685V

Check your menu(s) after you check the cabling.

if the SACD is hybrid, it's probably only in 2 ch stereo.. that way you won't get center or surround channels. it sucks.. because SACD is a multichannel format, and why in the hell they would release SACD's in 2 ch stereo is beyond me.

    Huh???

DSoTM has a CD layer and a hi-rez layer that has 2 programs, a 2 channel hi-rez mix and a multi-channel surround mix. Just make sure that Sony player is not in 2 channel mode.

Thanks a lot doro and danny!

I feel like such an idiot now...I have to admit that I've never had a CD player with different menu options...

All I had to do was select the SACD/CD button BEFORE the CD started.

Yes, there are many SACD in 2 channel only. But as mentioned hybrid has two layers..one 2 ch. and the other for "multi-channel" playback. Hybrids can be played on most cd players regardless if they are multi channel capable or not. If you buy an SACD it most likely will not be 5.1 unless it states it is multi channel(or hybrid). When I first started using my universal cd player I thought music would sound best to me in multi channel but with some exceptions I actually prefer playing music in 2 channel(2.1 actually) and movies in surround 5.1 format.

I believe they stopped making SACD only issues and everything is at least a 2CH hybrid.

That's news to me! Now if they would just stop compressing the music so I can enjoy better produced tunes!

I don't know the exact numbers but I'd imagine more than half of all SACD titles released are just plain old 2 channel stereo.

Actually none....but let me clarify. New SACD releases are basically 100% hybrids, whether they contain just a hi-rez 2 channel stereo or has an additional multi-channel surround mix. New single-layer SACD is now basically extinct and I know of no new single-layer SACD titles released within the last 2 years except for this one, which was made by Sony in Japan (right now on Japan Sony's website for SACD, it has a single-layer Celine Dion SACD for pre-order). I was told that any SACD manufacturing plant can still make single-layer SACD if they want to. On the other hand, where's the demand nowadays for single-layer SACD?

Single-Layer SACD was what I was thinking about. Thanks for the clarification. Demand? Where's the demand for Celine Dion?

that's why i liked DVD-Audio better. you got with ever disc 5.1 channel's of audio. but also a two ch mix down. so both could be heard. Why does the better format always lose out? ;)
