    Looks like it has some nice features at a relatively cheap price:

    HDMI V1.3 repeater (2in/1out, 1080p compatible)
    HDMI video up-conversion with DCDi technology
    Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD decoding
    90w/channel.
    NOT rated for 4 ohms.

    The bad: Downconverts 1080i component video signals to 720p when outputting over HDMI; HDMI video quality converted from analog sources may not satisfy videophiles; Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding cannot be used with current crop of high-definition video players.




    I've been watching the prices on Ebay, and refurb'ed from Onkyo is the cheapest route .... so far.

    Yamaha's 663 has just been released. $400.00 @ J&R. All the features of the Onkyo 605 + decoding of DSD bitstream for SACD.

    Wouldn't this require a SACD player with HDMI to feed the signal to the receiver like the Playstation 3? Spdiff and rca out wouldn't be an option, right?

    The 605 is excellent for the sound and ease of use but the video quality of the scaling from component video-to-HDMI is TERRIBLE. Very jaggy and mucks up the details. I just did an install with a Comcast HD box through component into the receiver and out through the HDMI and it looks godawful. Otherwise the auto cal was very cool and really improved the imaging, and SQ sounded very nuetral and very nice.

    I have an Onkyo SR605 (paid $370 delivered at Christmas) and like it a lot. BUT let me warn you that it does not have any pre-outs to connect an amp. I bought it along with some r50's from Frys. While I'm no audiophile, I wanted a little more than the r50s were giving. So I bought a pair of Rti10s, which tend to reqire a lot of power. The SR605 allows you to bi-amp the fronts, using surround back connectors, which takes away your ability to have a 7.1 system. Of course, if you're content with a 5.1 system, this is not a big deal. The problem is I cannot connect an amp in the future without upgrading from the 605. Right now I'm content with bi-amping the Rti10s, though some people seem to suggest that Rti10s will not shine without even more power. the upshot is that if you choose high-end power-hungry speakers in the future, you may wish you had moved up to the 705/805.

    Just my two cents...

    I would suggest the 705/805 also. You'll be glad you have pre/outs when its time to amp up.

    Yes. The idea is that the Yamaha 663 will do everything the Onkyo 605 does, plus able to decode DSD from a compatible player such as the Oppo 980.

    Of course, I am sure Onkyo will be offering something like the Yamaha 663 at a similar price very soon as its new models will be debuting soon.

    705 does DSD, as well as damn near any other format you throw at it. Also, it has Audyssey MultEQ XT, pre-outs, 5.1 to 7.1 conversion on lossless sources (i.e. DTS-MA, DD-HD), etc. 605 doesn't have any of that, so I say look for a 705 on the cheap instead. You'll be happier if you future-proof now.

    Uh... no, I just had a brain ****. :D But the 605 can't do 7.1 conversion on the lossless formats, while the 705 and up can.

    I'd definitely move up to the 705 or 805.
    705 includes pre-amp outs,
    805 handles DSD* conversion (+ 30 watts more power: In the future as you grow more obsessed the difference could mean only 'needing' a two channel Amp )

    *I have the 705 while it does DSD, it seems to require a player which outputs bitstream via HDMI -- for some reason (possibly my SACD player - a Yamaha) seems only to output PCM via HDMI. So I generally switch to Multichannel for SACD's. Tho multichannel is generally preferable for SACD's, my sense is that it doesn't respect your speaker's distance settings** - (a non-issue if you've got an ideal setup) - but seems to effect balance if your setup is wacky like mine (my Fronts are considerably further than my Center).

    Besides Oppo and other combo DVD/SACD/DVD-A players, is there a SACD stand-alone player coming down the not so distant future with HDMI?
