Need Subwoofer Advice

Hi Everyone,

I have just joined and would like some opinions on what subwoofer to add to my system. We have had the pieces for a while, but are now going to finish the system for home theatre use. Here are the speakers I will be using:

Fronts: RT-1000P
Center: CS245
Rears: R10

The receiver will be an upgrade to a Yamaha 663. We will be using this mostly for TV use, 5.1. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hey Greg; welcome. A budget would help. Room size is also critical to pick a sub. SVS is a "preferred" brand, and they can work with you to recommend the right sub. The new Polk line is also very good.

Would like to stay under $250 or so, and would prefer to stay with Polk if possible(but would look at others and would look at used ones also). Room size is 14x14x8. Thanks.

With $250 you might be lucky and find something good in the used market; your room is not big so that's a plus. But, I would strongly recommend you save a little more and get in the $400-$500 range, which will buy you a much better sub. If you buy now, chances are you'll still want to upgrade later, and might lose some money in the process.

Why's that??? Isn't a sub a speaker. Definetely try & stretch your budget. This way you make one purchase & your satisfied. Velodyne, Polk, SVS, HSu, REL, Revel, Totem, ML, JL Audio all make great products. There's other companies but that's enough to start with.

If you could get this it would be a very good option; this was my first "real" subwoofer and performed very well in a much bigger room. You won't have many in the used market though.

I would look for the POlK psw 450/550/650 awesome subs on the used market from around 200 bucks. The 450 was a particularily nice sub.

Yes, and a moderator can change it if they consider it so important. But this will not stop people from responding.

The new DSW line is miles above the performance of the Polk subwoofers of the past. There isn't anything special about the BIC H-100....period.

If you call HSU and speak with Pete, he will spend all the time needed to find the right sub for you. They make excellent subs and price points are spot on!:D

I would be interested to see how the HSU stf-1 stacks up against av123's x-sub.

Subwoofer guide on this site recommends the PSW505 sub. Any opinions on this choice? Thanks to everyone for all their help.

Go with the DSW500, it's better than the 505.

obviously you did not read his price limit on subwoofer:(...that's $250. :rolleyes:..

NO one said anything bad about DSW line subs....besides you can't have them under $250 anyway.:)...

Found a deal for a PSW 303 that would fit my budget. Thought on this one in my system. Thanks to everyone for you help.
