Those are crazy. My guess is that they were some kind of prototype that made it into the public hands. Interesting design using two spiders and no surround. They would be very venerable to getting debris between the cone and the frame. Since they aren't air-tight (no surround), I would guess they were in a vented box of some sort. Good luck with those and let us know if you get them. They look like a blast to play around with!

That is an older pioneer sub. If you look at the frame it has the pionees logo and SWM1036, the model number. I don't think it sold well. And that one doesn't right to me. Is that masking tape between the suspensions?

They weren't prototypes but you couldn't buy them retail.

Also, that might be masking tape but if it is, it is just there to protect the voice coil. But likely that is just the cardboard voicecoil former. Many VC formers look like that. You can just see this one because it is open and not covered by a complex basket and motor structure design.

Those flat, grayish black donuts at the back of the speakers are what's called bucking magnets. They are an alternative way to shield a speaker rather than encasing the whole magnet structure in a can that doesn't allow it to breathe.

They were likely subs mounted inside something like a HTiB setup or even a rear projection TV. Pioneer did make those at one point. They may not have even been in a Pioneer product or at least not a branded Pioneer product. It's not just TV's that need video and magnetic shielding. It could have even been mounted in a premium sound systems in a new car option or something.

But honestly, since they are quite rare, they obviously didn't sell well. But the lack of a surround would not make them more susceptible to get dirt lodged in the the space between the cone and the basket. That's honestly not even that big of a problem since the cone would likely move enough air to keep particles large enough to cause damage from getting stuck in such a place. They are obviously not intended for open-air mounting otherwise, they would have better cosmetics. If anything the design makes it more durable and not very prone to failures that most speakers see in the failure of a surround.

Kind of cool to watch the video the seller had posted with the auction.
