Sup guys, I am in the process of building a simple 2 channel audio set up just for music in a spare/workout/hangout/ room. I recently snagged a Denon avr-1700 for a really good price and now I'm debating the speakers. This is a very low budget simple set up nothing crazy! I have all the crazy stuff in my living room for HT. I was hoping to stay under $200 for a pair or $200 for 1 really nice one. Bass is prefered but not a must since i can get a sub later if I want one. Let me know what ya'll would prefer! Thanks.

There are some speakers in the Flea Market that would get you started with a nice budget rig. The LSi7 is a great suggestion but perhaps out of your range for now.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

How about some some used, vintage Polk Monitor 7s or 10s, especially if you could snag a pair locally?

I have 7Cs in my workout area in the unfinished part of my basement. They work great there and are plenty full-range enough to not need a sub.
    5.1 and 2.0 ch Basement Media Room: Outlaw 975/Emotiva DC-1/Rotel RB-1582 MKII/Rotel RB-1552/Audiosource Amp 3/Polk LS90, CS400i, FX500i/Outlaw X-12, LFM-1/JVD DLA-HD250/Da-Lite 100" HCCV/Sony ES BDP/Sonos Connect. DC-1/RB-1582 MKII/Sonos Connect also feed Polk 7C in garage or Dayton IO655 on patio.
    2.1 ch Basement Gym: Denon AVR-2807/Klipsch Forte I or NHT SB2/JBL SUB 550P x 2/Chromecast Audio.

I'm on board with the idea of classic or decent used Polks for a secondary music system. They'll be in your budget and are an outstanding value in the bang for the buck sweepstakes. Craigslist is your friend.

    Combo rig:

Onkyo NR1007 pre-pro, Carver TFM 45(fronts), Carver TFM 35 (surrounds)
    SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B
    PB13Ultra RO
    BW Silvers
    Oppo BDP-83SE

What would someone recommend, R50's or RTi6's? Those can both be bought as pairs for under $200.

I would also look for some Monitor 7's.

Go vintage. Better bang for the buck. A pair of Monitor 10's could be bad in very good condition for under $200 if you check out the locals, and they're fantastic.

If I had to choose between the R50's and the RTi6's, the RTi's would win every time. They just plain better.
Lovin that music year after year.

    Main 2 Channel System

    Polk SDA-1B,
    Promitheus Audio TVC SE,
    Rotel RB-980BX,
    OPPO DV-970HD,
    Lite Audio DAC AH,
    IXOS XHA305 Interconnects

    Computer Rig

    Polk SDA CRS+,
    Creek Audio 5350 SE,
    Morrow Audio MA1 Interconnect,

Better clarity, better bass, better presence, better soundstage? Could you clarify please? Thanks.

Better clarity, better sound stage. Bass goes about as deep, but is solid-er. More detailed. I've enjoyed the pairs I've listened to very much, especially considering their price. Having had R50's, it was a noticeable improvement.

Actually, seems like the consensus is that 7Cs are probably the least desirable generation in stock form because some folks have major issues with the stock tweeter (sl2000). I'm not at all saying to pass over 7Cs though. As secondary speakers, I sure enjoy the heck out of the pair that I picked up locally for $70, and I don't have a problem with the stock tweeters.

Folks really seem to like the earlier models with the Peerless tweeters. If interested, do a search here if you want to learn how to identify the various generations and tweeters they use.
