And what's with the black stuff around the edge of the dome ... is that normal?

Why don't you turn it over? It looks like the always horrible, SL2000.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

I can do that .... I just figured if it was identifiable (clear plastic dome) then figuring it out here would be better than unscrewing/rescrewing it.
Also wanted to ask about the black stuff around the edge of the dome. -
SL2000 indeed-dy. It even has the clear plastic cover on it!
The black stuff looks like paint or ink; not OEM to my knowledge. -
It might be ferrofluid that leaked into the dome diaphragm.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Thanks zingo, thought so
That's what I was thinking, dorokusai -

I have pulled apart a few SL2000 and have never seen ferrofluid ( Bone dry...and ferrofluid on other tweeters as well as the 3000's never dries up...its in the gap for goodexcept needing a bit more during a voice coil change ) ...wasnt that one of the big selling points of the SL3000 the inclusion of ferrofluid ( http://www.polksda.com/pdfs/SRSTLBrochure1990.pdf Page 6 ) ?
I have also seen when the adhesive loosens on the dome's edges ...it takes that exact same darker look ( On dead tweeters I have pulled the dome halfway off and let it sit back down...same look as that tweeter )
Ferrofluid is really fun stuff to play with...they used to sell it ( Might still ? ) to replenish after you put a new voice coil in or to mod tweeters that didnt come with it .
Looks like the original adhesive pulled away and somebody tried to repair it ...for that particular tweeter anywaysThe first rule of Fight Club is you don't talk about Fight Club -
I'm using the dried cornias of dead pilot whales for tweeter dome replacments. Removes the 5 kHz peak and requires less break in time than changing the tweeters/caps.'65 427 Shelby Cobra

Sweet, looks like I got my work cut out.
I''ll do the candyliquir SL2000 cap mod along with the dried whale cornea update together!
I'll call down to the local electronics store and see when their next shipment of dried whale corneas are expected -
