my favorite SACD for both performance and sonics:
is Bach: The Keyboard Concertos, Vol 1 (Angela Hewitt/Australian Chamber Orchestra). It's not cheap, but worth every penney.
    http://www.amazon.com/Bach-Keyboard-Concertos-Vol-Hybrid/dp/B0009K9PHK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1218374788&sr=1-1

You can hear a sampling of redbook layer at the iTunes Store:
    http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=197219341&s=143441
(You'll probably get the best glimmer of the sonics listening to the 1rst Mvt of the Brandenburg.)

In the same spirit as original poster, this is a disk that can be fully enjoyed by classical newbies. But don't be fooled by the immediate satisfaction, the subtle complexities of Bach's counterpoint grow on you over time, so you'll not tire of this disk. Hewitt has assembled several of his finest works: The crown jewel being the Concerto in D minor BWV 1052. (Tho newbies may prefer the Brandenburg)

Sonically: I'd rate it 5 out of 5, the sound is warm but voicings clear as a bell. And since due to the nature of the original material (none of the sudden dynamic bursts of say Orff, or Beethoven symphonies) It can be fully enjoyed with any of Polk's speakers.

PS: Don't be fooled by Amazon's listing: the pieces are performed on Piano NOT Harpsichord. (this irks some purists - but surely wouldn't have bugged Bach at all, given that he "repurposed" most of his music for multiple instruments depending on what was was on hand)
    LR Setup:
    Polk RTi10's, RTi6's, CSiA6 (5 ch setup)
    Onkyo 705 & Denon 3808ci Receiver, Onk 875
    Parasound 2250 Amp
Sony 26" KDL series Bravia LCD
    Panny DMR-EH75 Recorder
Panny DVD-F87 (5 disk DVD player)
    NAD T585 (DVD/SACD)
    Yamaha DVD-C961 (5 disk SACD/DVD)
    SciAnt Explorer 8500HD Cable Box
    Orig & 5Gen iPods, , Wii

    Plans/Fantasies:
    • 400 disk player that handles ALL formats, sounds as good as NAD with Panasonic interface & compatability.

I just ordered the "Mozart Chamber Music for Winds and Strings" SACD from elusivedisc.com. I used the Promo code NEWWEB and got free 2-3 day shipping. Seems to be the same base price everywhere ($16.99)
    ...

Anybody else that has this hear the same thing I am hearing?
Sounds like a bit like, not sure how to describe but sounds almost like, static at about 33-36 seconds into the first track in 2 channel SACD? I haven't tried the CD layer yet.

I thought that I had enough versions of the beautiful 2nd Symphony of Howard Hanson(from Wahoo, Nebraska)in my collection until I just recently discovered this Telarc SACD( http://www.audaud.com/article.php?ArticleID=937 )with its terrific sound and fine performances. Available for about $12 up from the usual sources(Amazon sellers, etc.).

Thanks for posting John! I enjoy many of the works performed by Eric Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops. I'll try out this one.

Joe, all of the early Elton releases sound great on SACD, Tumbleweed, Madman and the first Elton John are all excellent quality recording that make for good SACD material. I personally don't care for the music on Don't Shoot me and Captain Fantastic these are probably good recordings. Elton's voice and material started to change, not enough strings and "soulful" lyrics.

In case anybody is interested, I've been searching for the SACD version of Beck - Sea Change for awhile now. I couldn't find it anywhere except perhaps used, which is not a problem except that the used prices are jacked way up.

Anyway it's available for order at buy.com for about $15 shipped. Only issue is that its on backorder, but if they ever come through and get it in stock, here is a chance to snag a new copy of this highly rated (and apparently must-have) multichannel SACD. Just FYI, I ordered my copy on Aug 27-still on backorder

I think you're going to be waiting a long time.....I could be wrong, but it is out of print.

I hope they're reprinting it-not sure what's involved with that, but if I were an artist and saw that there was a demand....
It may be OOP, but for some reason buy.com listed it, chose a sale price and all. I can only hope--worst case scenario they refund my money. :)

The Nutcracker - (complete ballet); Serenade in C major, OP.48

The London Sumphony Orchestra -- Philharmonia Humgarica
    -Antal Dorati

    475 6623 MSA2

This SACD is so dynamic that it is startling. Very open and airy like an LP but with the sheer musical weight of an SACD. Forget about air around the instruments, the air is around each musician. It is absolutely fabulous. Imaging and detail & inner detail is incredible.

    Very excellent recording.

    Highly recomended.

Yourmusic.com. $6.99. I really would like to get BERLIOZ/SYMPHONIE FANTASTIQUE SACD but I can't seem to find it at a reasonable price.

Here's a pic of the cover.

I stumbled accross this SACD today and bought it used for $10 at a local cd store. WOW, it is great stuff. It's very exciting, dramatic and has lots of flair.

I also picked up the Mozart, Boston Chamber Players SACD. I liked track one, then I lost interest and fell asleep.

Ha, I like it as well, of course I also haven't made it through the thing without falling asleep-of course I am listening while on a comfy couch at the wee hours of the night each time....;) I don't dare put it on while driving.;)

Ern Dog-Check out this tread re the Mozart SACD, let me know what you think-You can just reply in that thread so as not to derail this one.
