A how to Question

I am replacing a section of damaged cloth material on the side of my SDA-SRS speakers and on removing the panel from the side of the cabinet I have found that the Oak timber inlay is secured by 21 nails that are flush.
Looking at the way the mdf section has been routered to shape and a series of countersunk holes have been drilled through the mdf panel for what I can only assume to be to secure the inlay section of timber, but they have not been used at all!
Has anyone come across the same situation as to replace the cloth I need to remove this timber inlay but their is a very good chance I will either damage or break the mdf panel in the process as it is thinner than the inlay piece.
Any suggestions? Not sure why the countersunk holes were not used as it certinally looks like that's what they were for to me, any suggentions would be greatly appreciated.
