ITEM IS SOLD
Foolish or not, I've fully dove into BluRay and picked up another BD player for my bedroom yesterday. Now that leaves me with a perfectly great Panny S97 and no place to use it, so here it is for sale.
The Panny S97 was one of the most desirable affordable upscaling DVD players back a couple years ago (before the Oppo 980/981). It has the well known Faroudja DCDI deinterlacing and upscaling (I think its FLI-2310). It can output 480p, 720p, or 1080i over HDMI. It has full analog outs, HDCD decoding, DVD-A, Dolby PLII, etc, etc. Also has Optical and Dig Coax output. Has no problem playing burned discs either.
This player scored a 91 on the famed DVD Benchmark at Hometheaterhifi.com and for a couple years, it was was untouched in the under $300 price range (until Oppo came along). Speaking of Oppo, you really can't find a used Oppo for under $100 these days. The 971H doesn't have much, if anything on the S97. The 970 would be a step down from the S97. The current ones (980/981) are really only better because they can output 1080p.
Still a very good DVD player, with a lot of high end features including customizable video settings and great build quality. This one is in near perfect shape, and is perfectly functional. This player surely has very low hours on it because it has always been in our bedroom, where we mostly watch out satellite DVR.
Comes with power cord, original remote, and a printed copy of the owner's manual. Firmware is updated to one of the latest that minimizes macroblocking. It will be packed with care for shipping or local pickup in Atlanta area.

Is $70 too much to ask for one of the top 10 best performing DVD players ever (according the the Secrets Benchmark)? This is no slouch guys. If you are sticking to DVD for a few more years, this is a great deal on a top performing player. Its off to Ebay if I don't get some interest here soon. For rig details, see my profile. Audioholics has a very detailed review of the S97, and has even updated it with the HQV benchmark score.

By the way, the HQV Benchmark is geared towards the Silicon Optix processors and they are pretty much the only ones that pass the test with flying colors (talking about the Reon and Realta processors).
EDIT: I just noticed that this player still sells for $250 at CircuitCity.

Does it allow you to skip through FBI warnings and studio logos? If so, then I might be interested. How much would shipping be to 13215?

Not sure if you can skip every one. It seems to be about the same as any other DVD player that I've used in that it will let you skip some, but for others it won't.
In most cases, if you press stop, then menu, it will go straight to the menu and avoid most of the crap at the beginning.
Shipping will probably be about $12 for FedEx Ground, but may vary if the final package weight is more (or less) than I estimated (@12lbs). Either way, I would only charge you actual rates. For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -
I have this unit and would grab another if I didn't have 3 DVD players already. You can fast forward through warnings, preview, etc., but not skip chapters through those items....I thought all dvd players did the same.....grab a beer and be patient.
It is a great, great unit. -
A last bump before going to Ebay this weekend. For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...
