Onkyo 805 lip syncing issues?

I hear from time to time from people who own this receiver that it's "Notorious for lip syncing issues". I'm sure that's quite an exaggeration but I'm curious, have any of you ever experienced it or know what causes it or anything?
I know there are a lot of smart people here who own this receiver so I figured this is the place to ask.

Yes, it does exist and Onkyo knows about it. Best way to fix it is to push the lipsynch delay to it's lowest value (45ms IIRC) and your speaker distance to 30 ft for your furthest speaker and adjust the rest in relation to that. (If your speakers are at 12,10,12,8,4 then you would set your distances to 30, 28,30, 26, 22) This minimizes the effect.

The only way to eliminate it completely is to use the multi-channel in connections. The delay is caused by the 3 DSP's processing time. Using multi-channel in, you eliminate the 3 DSP's from the chain.

I have the 805. I set my AV sync to 0ms and let Audyssey calculate the speaker distances. (I don't have to make them maxed out like JH said)

I have NO lipsync issues with my setup when using bluray, dvd, or HDDVD. Sometimes my satellite feed has lipsync error, but that is in the feed, not the fault of the Onkyo.

I just don't understand how this is such an issue with some folks. I've looked and looked for it, but it just doesn't happen with my setup.

It only happens when im watching directv. And its very rare.

I have the PR-SC885 pre-amp. There is a lip sync issue for sources that don't run the video through the 885. I have no lip sync issues with my DVD or HD DVD players, as they do run the video through the 885, in fact I have to set about 40ms delay. My cable on the other hand runs direct to the TV (no cable box), with optical out from the TV to the 885. Lip sync is horrible. The audio lags behind the video, and there is no way to adjust for that.

I have tested the cable with a friends cable box running HDMI through the 885, and this corrects the problem. Apparently the REON chip in the 885 delays the video enough to put things back in sync. This would be a great solution, except to get a cable box, I need to upgrade my cable service to a higher level, and rent the box. This would cost an additional $60 a month, or $720 a year. I don't watch much TV, so it's not worth it to me.

This helped me a lot, but what about people saying there are issues with Blu-Ray movies as well not just DirectTV and such?

Good explanation. I recently ran into this problem two nights ago while watching the OSCAR. The lip sync was really bad. I cant really adjust the speaker distance because my space is limited.

When I pushed the lipsync to 0. I actually found the audio to be a bit ahead of the video. Weirdness...

Whats the default setting on the onkyo for AV sync? 40 Ms?

My 605 is set to 40 by default

I just keep it set to 0

Yeah I am going to leave mine back to 40ms and pretend I never heard about this problem If onkyo fixed this problem, their receiver sales would probably increase 10-15%

have mine set to zero with speaker distance at 30' and still get lip sync with hd dvd and blu ray. i have a crt rear projector with no lag. watched the rock on blu-ray last night and still had some lip sync. really annoying!!! no fix for it.

And from what i've seen and heard...it's not Onkyo's fault, at least not totally.

There are certain channels on DirecTV that no matter where I set my receiver at the sound is ALWAYS slightly ahead or behind the picture.
This has to do with the channel broadcaster, and how the show is encoded before it is broadcasted. Most notorious for me is DiscoveryHD and other channels affiliated with them.

Rarely, if ever, do I encounter lip-sync issues with the rest of the channels. And I NEVER see it on Blu-ray or HD-DVD movies.

crap i go along so happily w/ my HT until someone brings things like this up and then I spend 2 days trying to determine if I have the same probably. Ive had the 805 for 18 months and never noticed any issues like that.

Well, I mentioned earlier that I only have issues with a certain set of channels. Not sure if this fits the requirements.

I have mine set to 0, with my front + center speakers 12' from me.

that is completely different altogether. that is merely station lip sync issues. mine are legit with high def audio via ps3 and hd-a35. it's when the 3 the dsp chips come into play.

Maybe you got a pre-production model that doesn't have these issues, since it's only been available for about 8 months.

There is no reason to leave the setting at default 40ms. Adjust it up or down until you have perfect sync. If you have the video before the audio and your setting is at 0ms, try increasing the speaker distance to the max (don't worry about actual dimensions, just have them staggered to reflect the difference). If you've done all that, and you still see the video ahead of the audio, that is what some people over at AVS are complaing about. Like I said, I have not seen that at all.

There is no doubt that there is some audio delay with the 805. That said, most newer TVs have some inherent delay. The more processing, the more delay. My A3000 adds about 20ms delay if I enable Motion Enhancer.

I think the biggest problem comes when you have the 805 hooked to a TV that has virtually no delay. Then there is almost no way for the audio to keep up with the video. That is probably the source of many of the complaints.

thus i stated i am using a crt rear projector. it's still in the 3 chips though. optical is synced nicely. i'm debating what to do about my issue.

Oops, You are right. Ive only had it 7 months and 24 days. Its my Tv that is 18 months old. LOL

Yep, good old fashioned, no signal processing, CRT rear projection. Virtually zero delay on those. I had one until last month. Sadly, I think you would have lip sync errors no matter which receiver you used (talking about any new HDMI/TrueHD/DTSMA decoding receivers). I suspect they will all have some inherent delay that will screw with your setup. I've seen complaints about the Denon 08ci series as well.

I didn't get much time to view my old Toshiba CRT-RPTV with the 805. I probably only had them together for a couple weeks before I sold the TV, and that was prior to my acquiring a Bluray. With the Tosh, I had everything hooked by component, and dig coax/optical, but I don't remember much, if any lip sync error.

EDIT: I just remembered, that I wasn't using the Audyssey at all when I had my Toshiba. I didn't have time to do the setup until after I got my new Sony.

I'm not pressuring you. I was really just trying to say that if I were you, I wouldn't return the Onkyo and try another HDMI receiver in an attempt to rid the lip-sync problem. They will probably all have some delay. If your sound through optical is in sync, I would just use that and sacrifice the TrueHD/DTSMA sound.

i thought about that. but by that point, i'd go back to my h/k avr7300. i got the onkyo for the lossless sound exclusively.:mad:

maybe a new tv will be on the horizon...i'm taking a collection. i accept paypal.:rolleyes:

I onlt really noticed it on the Matrix on HD-DVD through HDMI. Most folks on the AVS Forums are noticing this primarily throught the HDMI connection. Does anyone NOT have this issue that is using HDMI?

Me. I have everything hooked through HDMI, Audio, Video. No lipsync problems.

I have no issues either. Never touched any settings or anything.

The vast majority that I know of have no problems with anything, there are just a select few who are having problems. I wish I could see it to see just how bad it is or if they're exaggerating/seeing things.

I've had lip syncing issues before but that was a long time ago (before I even got my 805). Tested pretty much every source I could and I cannot find this issue.

Also, it seems like most people who have the issue have it when watching tv. And it varies from show to show, this leads me to believe that it's got nothing to do with Onkyo in the least. I've seen lip syncing issues on tv shows before, I wonder if people are just blaming their receiver for something that is caused by the broadcaster?
