Room Tuning . . . Where to Start?

Okay, I've been to Phil's house and his listening room is chock full of room treatments. It sounds good.
What I want to know is where to start? Should I go for a DSP or just the good old fashioned bass traps, corner traps, etc. How do I know where to place these big ole gadgets?
The main question is; is this going to cost me an arm and a leg?
Any help would be greatly apprecieated.

Hey Joe,
Here's a lot of companies to check out. Don't even think about DSP until you have your room set up with various treatments (bass traps, absorption panels, & diffusion) then you can bring in the DSP to really do some fine tuning. Any questions just give me a shout.

When I built my room I knew I'd need treatments and also had no idea where to start, so I emailed GIK acoustics and Brian helped me design what to put where. I am sure there are lots of other options but it's a good start._________________________________________________

I didn't end up liking the DSP I tried (TaCT RCS 2.0). Then, I like analog over digital so that may have something to do with it.
Definitely, there's something to be said for some room treatments in the proper places. Though, short of a big $$$$ investment and whole-room treatment plan, I think:
1) Putting lots of STUFF (cushy seating, plants, bookshelves, rugs, stuff on the walls) in the room in the right places is a fantastic blend of diffusion and absorption that's both aesthetic & functional.
2) Experimenting with proper speaker & seating placement is going to be the most critical piece of the equation, and it's FREE. Also, try different rooms if possible.
3) You will need a LOT of traditional absorptive traps before it makes a significant measurable difference in the bass - this is why proper speaker/seating placement is so critical. Don't think a couple of tri-traps in the corners is going to flatten out a Himalayan bass response. I haven't tried the membrane resonators (like Ethan W's Real Traps) though; those may be promising.Tannoy Dimension TD10, SOTA Star Sapphire, Heathkit W4A's, McIntosh MC2100, Eddie-Current Zana Deux, Singlepower SDS, Sennheiser HD650, Audio-Technica L3000, Sony Qualia 010
