volume issue with H/K 347

I just received my H/K 347 from harman audio, after auditioning the receiver from best buy. I went ahead and attached all the components and cables, configured everything and ran into two issues:
1. The volume is not as "loud" as my previous receiver that I had auditioned- I am using the same test songs and the same listening volume as before.
2. The volume fades in and out, sometimes coming out muffled.
My configuration is as follows: Running HDMI from DVD, Comcast Cable to an HDMI switch to my Sony Wega TV. From the TV i am running analog RCA to Video 3 input. I am also running an optical cable from my DVD player to the optical 1 port. All cables, wiring, and switch is from monoprice.com.
The above issues happen while listening to a DVD or just watching normal TV. Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Was it a refurb? Sounds like it's broken, send it back.

Its definitely a refurb. Is there anything else i can look for? I'll send it back, but i dont want to pay double shipping for another unit to be delivered...

There's nothing you could look for that would cause the volume fading in and out. That's definetely not a setting or anything.
If you bought it directly from Harmon, they may send a call tag for return, and I've never heard of any company charging shipping to send out a new unit, though some make you pay to return the defective one. -
Try connecting up a CD player directly to an analog input and see what it does. You have a lot of connections there, could be something flaky somewhere.2 Channel rig:
