I backed up the system before trying to install this service pack. Luckily, the installation process went very well without a single problem.

In addition, the SP3 also make a restore point to roll back if needed.

Supposedly the new service pack reduces overhead by around 10 percent. Noticed anything tangible at all?

The computer and internet seems to be faster as I can tell. Other than that, SP3 updates more to the computer security.

I've had download sitting safely in my recycle bin since not wanting to risk it, and have to clean/repair install. No hiccups?

    Is this the same filename?

    windowsxp-kb936929-sp3-x86-enu.exe

Maybe DL a fresh one, not one from the trash bin. I'll cross my fingers.

Seems about the same, but must have cleaned out the kbxxxx crap that's been added up over the years, even if your running xp on a new machine.

Check Control Panel>Add Remove Program> clickbox 'show updates', and scroll down

Instead of a list of updates, it's just XP SP3

I'll try Process Explorer and run some logs, but it seems fine. Should be good for running Office on a laptop, which is most of what I do when I'm not farting around here.

Thanks for being the guinea pig!

My Norton Security Online Auto-Protect (via Verizon/Yahoo) doesn't like the service pack and refuses to start so far. Still researching a fix for that. Nothing mission critical on the machine it's on, so no worries.

Too bad you didn't have a Windows XP BSOD. Would have been funnier...

So far good things here, a bit quieter and cooler on a dual core laptop, which is more sensitive to a lighter/more efficient OS. It's subjective, but battery time seems marginally better but I've not timed it. Like a fresh install of some of the core components instead of a hundred hotfixes.

I have no reliable metrics. Just have anecdotal info, and it seems 'smoother' if that makes sense. I have a fairly fresh XP install after ditching Vista, so there was no 'character' that often happens after a year of heavy use, and playing with many apps and regedits.

All I can point to is that it's an upgrade rather than a bundle of patches and hotfixes, and this has lightened the load slightly. Of course this all could be in response to having read the Cnet article a month ago, and this is what I was expecting. Slightly better, smoother, cooler. Stable in beta too. I'm hugging it.

Tried this today and restored back to yesterdays restore point.

It made the start up process take a whole lot longer and it didnt seem to affect the internet. It did however make a few things act squirrelly like trying to open a PDF file locked up Firefox and IE and when I installed Microsoft Office 2003 it didnt install properly and wouldnt recognize my internet connection. After restoring everything worked like it used to.

That sucks. I'd be nervous, but this is going back to HP for a couple of weeks. I'm just out of warranty, but they are fixing a known issue. Surprising, and I'm impressed. They are even paying shipping both ways.

Glad the uninstall got you out with no damage.
