I guess it's time to test the waters. I've had a couple of questions and comments lately.

Thanks, I love the old Macs. These are in decent shape. They need a bit of touch up on the black but the chrome and lettering is still nice. I'll eventually get them done. They're recapped now (Mundorf Silver oils are a good sounding cap close to the vintage Macs) and I replaced a couple of resistors that were weak.
I'm looking for a real nice pair of MC30s to redo next. My fav tubes are really the 6L6. I just love the sound of them. The big tubes will kick the big speaks but I think it's hard to beat the 6L6 for sounding good.
    thanks for the welcome.

I am looking into all of the above for my Cary V12...

not sure which way to go....
I have a few ideas, but haven`t made a move, as I need 6 matched pairs (12), and I want to get the EL84 and 6922`s to match up with the drivers

    Mullards maybe...
    Maybe bugle boys.....who knows

    any Idea`s ?
You seem to know tubes pretty well....

Oh, and Welcome to the Fray !

Really nice gear ya got there....I dig Mac stuff..

Maybe one day I will get to own a set of Mac Mono`s

I think Cary mono`s are next though.......

I`m kinda liking the Cary gear these days !!!

    Beardog03,
It's hard to go wrong with BBs, Mullard, Tele, and a lot of good name tubes. They've earned their stripes.
I've found the RCA blacks made in Jersey to be a good all around tube and priced right. I'm running Conn organ
12AU7's in my Macs. I love the Conn tubes. I started using them in my old Pas2 when I lost a Tele. I threw in a quad and haven't looked back. They have excellent range, longevity, stable, and cheap. I like the 7308 variants in some applications, but not every tube is a "cure all, perfect fit" and rolling is learning. And spending unfortunately. I've tried some of the "Name" reissues and haven't found anything I really care for.
If I can find someone I "respect" with similar or the same gear I'll ask. No body knows it all. Especially me. Like everyone else I learn everyday.

    Me too...
    That`s half the fun !

I really liked the 7308 in my old CDP (AH! 4000)

I was looking to get some Tung Sol 6550`s, but didn`t know what to use for the "front end"

I also have my eye on some 6L6`s....again, what do do for the front end....

I amd running the Cary SLP-98 F1 Pre amp, and have some Popes, and some Electro Harmonix in the "back seat" (breaking in)

I am also breaking in some new cables...

    `08 MIT Shotgun S1`s....3pr

These are the most articulate, clear ,most "un-veiled" cables I have ever heard....I am stunned by the detail that they allow to come through....

My next cable purchase will be some S1 bi-wires for the 9`s, then I am done with cables....it just doesn`t get any better than this......at least not in my price range and with the level of gear that I have....

    Back to the tubes though,

I am able to run a wide variety of tubes in the V12, and I really am looking to roll some soon..
I currently have the SED "C" Wings (SVEL34`s), and had some KT-88`s that I liked....I just had a couple of bad ones that needed to be replaced so I have been playing the "wings" for some time now.....not a bad tube at all....

WELCOME!!! Glad to see you made it over to the forum. I'm the guy that bought your Monitor 7B's from you. They sound great and I have no plans of ever getting rid of them.

    Hey Nick,
I thought it might be you. Good hearing from you. I'm finishing up the move out of the apartment and when I get everything "sorted out" you have to come over. It's a big mess still trying to fit two residences into one place.
I'm gonna grab me a pair of the big boys (SDA) if I can find me a pair already gone through within driving distance.
Glad you got the tube amp. I know how my old 7s sound on hot glass.

Yeah I went with the Jolida even after you told me not too. But it was about the cheapest way for me to get into tubes. I love it so far. I have repainted it added Cardas binding posts and added some sonicaps. I am still trying to find the right tubes though. I have my eye on the SED winged C and some seimens 7308's. Right now it has JJ El34's Amperexs 6dj8's and Mullard 12ut7's. It sounds pretty good but a little on the bright side for my taste.

I can't wait for you to move closer. I am very interested in hearing some different stuff. All I have to go by is my own stuff. I have never had anything to compare it to. It might sound like crap for all I know. But I like it.:)

    Beardog,
I've used the "winged Cs" and I like them best of the newer tubes in the 34. The EH aren't bad and an acquaintence of mine uses them in guitar amps. He's using a "burn in" process that really brings the EH to life. I'm not sure how it's done but I think it involves a couple of seconds of higher voltage than called for to clean the surfaces out. I'll know more about it later since he's coming over to bring me some amps and pick up some vintage drivers. I'll let you know. I just know it works great.
The EL34 for me is the Pinhole Mullard XF1, then the XF2 single halo for more bass for hard rock, metal, and last of the Mullard is the Metal base 1. It's a bit soft for my taste. Amperex is good and Matsushita Philips isn't bad but the word's out on them and prices are going up.
I like the vintage 6L6 tubes best for low level listening. With tube amps I don't have the need for loud to bring out the music like I do with SS. (not wanting to start the tube/SS debate JMHO)
The 88/6550 is great. I haven't found a re-issue I really like and the vintage tubes are expensive and I can only afford what I like if I mortgage my manhood, kids, and next born. I hate being a poor boy. (probably because I spend too much on audio)
Give me a shout to talk tubes. I may be able to help you out playing around.

    Nick,
I just have to work on a lot of the Jolida. I love the sound of them when re-capped and tubed. There are a lot of them in use. I think many of the issues are "user error".
I've actually got one like yours I need to fix and may do the cosmetics like you did.
My dad had a body shop as I was growing up and I can make it pretty like yours. It's pretty rough and not been cared for. My biggest issue with Jolida is their early tube CDPs as they were just modded existing stock best as I can tell. The 100 is a nice unit though and I'll eventually own one and do the mods and upgrade. It's high on the "have to have" list. But I find the list growing and changing daily. I've got the SDA fever now so darned bad my list is useless.
