Noise in the volume pot

Hey guys,

My Trends Audio TA-10 is making all sorts of noise in the left channel when I adjust the volume with music going. What can I do to fix it? I hear this happens fairly often.

Sooner I can get it done, the better. I have to tell you, that $120 gem sounds so much better than the Parasound P/HP 850 & Adcom GFA-535 that's currently pulling duty in its stead.

Word of warning: I have about as much experience with the electronic side of things as a Gorilla does building a 747.
Lovin that music year after year.

Some contact cleaner such as Deoxit usually helps; you do need to at least get the cover out, and from there depending on the pot and where it is located you might need to continue using the screwdriver. You want to be able to spray IN the pot, turn it a bit and let it dry.

Hmm. Where would I spray this spray? It looks pretty self contained from what I can see.

Yes, that one looks pretty much sealed and you probably don't want to try to open it up.

I'd remove the knob (There must be a set screw in it) and spray from the front trying to get between the housing and the (shaft?), and turn the hell out of it. Also if there's any opening in the body, even if it is small, spray there. Then let it dry WELL.

It is self contained, but might have an opening between the legs and the red board. If you can get the nozzle close enough to backsplash into it, that should do it.

You can also play with the knob to 'work out' the dirt. This will never fix the problem, only lessen it.

Please don't drill a hole as the shavings that result might ruin your day. If you need to, you'll see that the casing is held down by bending mini flaps. You can pry it open enough to get the nozzle in and close it back up later. Leave it open if you do have to mess with it.

Short term solution might work before getting in the CAIG and prying open one of the tabs. Most Pots have a wiper built into them. The crackling might be due to the volume usually being set in one place/range most of the time and then moving it off that sorta dead spot.

Take the volume knob and turn it all the way down. The turn it up a half turn. Turn both ways 10 times quickly. Then reapeat the half way turn & the 10 quick turns both ways till at full turn. I usually repeat it going down to 0 turn too.

Since I haven't seen the inside of the pot, not sure if it has a built in wiper. However, this does work on most potienometers that get a bit noisey and it couldn't hurt to try it as a short term solution. Long term solution would be CAIG Fader Lube.

If you have a meter you can easily see the rough spot on the pot as you turn it. Just set it to Ohms and hook the leads to the legs of the pot (if visible)

I've found it at Rat Shack before. They don't carry the FaderLube though.
