Who uses Auto Calibration w/ Ext. Amp?

Who uses it and what are your thoughts?

My HK does a great job, BUT, thats for its own amplification. If I were to add an external amp into the mix and run the EZ/eq, would I be taking away from the richness the new amp brings? By running the Ez/EQ, wouldnt the HK just make the new amp sound axactly like the AVR? Because its re-equ'ing it the same way?

Thoughts?

Hey Jake,

I think the EZ-EQ is still very helpful with external amps. At the very least, it will get the gain/volume as it should be across your speakers. When I had my 200wpc Carvers on the fronts, it set everything else to +10. I had to move the gain on the Carver amps to 60% to get it in the ballpark with the rest of the system.

EZEQ may flatten out the peaks valleys, but that's a good thing, right? It can't change the sonic signature or take away from power reserve / headroom. I think it only helps and in no way hinders the system.

I will eventually get some time to calibrate my HT using a avia disc and spl meter, but for the time being, I have much faith in the EZEQ.

I know the HK did a good job with my system. I'm using REW for my calibration. Minor adjustments to my sub phase and HK's crossover to get a fairly flat responce.

I was very curious. I know some believe in all settings flat. And use room treatments or active crossovers to fix peeks and nulls. Most people who believe this, are using seperates. I have not found many to use an auto/Eq for seperates.

If the HK, or any other AVR, using its own amplification, sets an adjustment to have its own amp perform well, then you add a "warmer" sounding external amp to the equation, wont the auto/eq just change the warmer sound from the amp and make it sound like it would if using the AVR?

I hope you can understand what I'm trying to ask. Going beyond headroom/power reserve.

I guess if I do like the sound from the Auto/Eq, then I will like the sound when using it with an external amp.
