Why the heck does Cher sound like that?

You know, the robotic / electronic / processed sound in Cher's "Believe," what the heck is that?
It sounds awful!

I've noticed the same thing with Hellogoodbye and T-Pain, is this sound acceptable? It's like super compression or something like that...

It's an intentional digital effect. Madonna, Akon, and a lot of newer R&B/hip-hop producers are using it now. Cher was the first big name that used it as far as I know. It's been used in electronic music since the 90's, although then I think vocoders were used and it wasn't exactly the same.

It was also used in some of the Matrix movies, and in some horror/scary movies. It's just an effect.

I kinda like it on some tracks. It's the artist that annoys me, not the effects.

I suspect it's a way of hiding an artist true talent level. Case in point: the actual voice of ****-**** Amy Winehouse at the recent Grammy's.

If you like Cher, you'll love Lionel Ritchie!
Seriously, this is most amusing; Lionel's clearly a good sport.

There is a scene in The 5th Element, where this tall, blue lady sings an incredible Opera song. I used to love it, but as my HT gets better and better, you can tell more and more the digital effect they use for her voice. Now that same song, isnt as great anymore.
