Onkyo 605(B) and my setup

Here's my setup, first of all...

Fronts: RTi10's
Center: CSi3
Surrounds: FXi4's
Sub: DSW Pro 600

Now, I have heard that it is best to set my fronts to "Large" and my surrounds to "Small"...

My receiver has either "Full Band" or 20-120mhz for the speaker "size"... Which should I set my speakers for?

    Hi ryanjoachim,

Onkyo 605 comes with Audessy auto setup. Just plug in the mic and follow the instructions. It will set every thing up automatically.

You can the tweak those settings manually if you like.

To push RTi10s, you probably should have stepped up to a 705 or 805... but since you have the 605, set the mains to full range and all others to 80Hz.

Audyssey, as implemented by Onkyo, detects any speaker that goes below 80Hz as "full range". Those speakers will likely all detect that way, though they shouldn't be run that way. Run Audyssey, let it EQ the speakers (the Audyssey 2EQ on the 605 doesn't EQ the sub - another reason you should have gotten the 705/805), then change the crossovers manually.

Well, in the Auyssey setup it DOES "ping" the sub during the speaker setup, and last time I did it it set my sub to -12db :(

It's setting up the distance and the level adjustment. It's good to have the sub adjustment close to 0dB. If you lower the volume knob on the back of the sub and rerun audessy it should raise the adjustment.

What about the Rti8's? I'm considering the 605 & 705, right now they have the 605 for $305 refurb. I've heard the 705 has been as low as $434 refurb in the past though. I might just wait and see if one becomes available.

I have heard so many different opinions on what to set the knob at. Is the receiver taking control of that option since I have the digital coax connected? Or is there a rule for where it would normally be set at? (mhz)

The RTi8's aren't as power hungry as the 10's. You'd probably get away with either and it'd sound great. But I would get the 705 so you can have pre-outs in case you decide to go the pre-pro route in the future.
I run my RTi8's from the 805 and it sounds phenomenal. I absolutely love it.

get the 705. The pre outs allow you to plug an rca plug for each channel into a hipower amp if you decided to external amp later on...which I just did...

I recommend the 705 not only for the pre-outs as mentioned, but because it has Audyssey MultEQ XT, whereas the 605 has Audyssey 2EQ. MultEQ XT does hundreds of points of equalization for each speaker to correct for your room acoustics, while 2EQ does a more basic equalization with no correction on the subwoofer.

I'm running the 705 with RTi70 mains, CSi40 center and RTi28 surrounds with a SVS 20-39CS+ sub. MultEQ XT made those speakers sound SO much nicer than they did before. Plus, the 705 can do 5.1 to 7.1 conversion of hi-res audio like Dolby TrueHD, whereas the 605 doesn't have the DSP power to do it. You'll be infinitely happier with the 705.

705 it is, I like the THX certification and apparently it doesn't overheat as much or at all like the 605. What's my optimal audio/video connection 1.3a HDMI cables? I'm planning to hook my cable into the receiver and my DVD player and then run everything to the TV. Will I still be able to hear sound on the TV without turning on the receiver or will I have to run separate connections to the TV from the cable box? Right now my cable box had DVI so I'm going to try and get a newer one with HDMI so I can just get a standard cable which I'll be able to use later, doesn't seem like anyone uses DVI much anymore. Thanks

If you use HDMI (or optical for sound) from the cable box to the receiver, then to the TV with HDMI, then yes you will be able to hear sound from the TV.

You can turn that option off in the receiver if you want. It's under HDMI Audio Out.

The only reason I got my 605B is because:

1: It was on sale for $350
2: It decoded DolbyTrueHD and DTS-HD
3: I was on a budget...and I blew most of it on the speakers themselves :(

Even with the receiver turned off? I'm thinking more about my wife or me for that matter watching TV without the speakers (as opposed to silencing the TV when the speakers are on).

Also, the 605 is a sweet receiver and good value for $350!! I upped my budget on the speakers too unfortunately but it will be worth. That's the best place to spend it if you have to choose since you've got the decoding anyway.

I'd imagine most people won't have the overheating, and some have added external fans.

The 705 has two thermally-triggered fans underneath. I've never heard mine come on, so mine is either running really cool even under load or the fans are REALLY quiet.

    It's discontinued now though...

    And lock?
As long as you leave the "HDMI Audio Out" option in the receiver ON, you will be able to turn off the receiver and just turn up the TV volume (not 100% sure about that, but it should work)

You're saying to have the TV on, receiver off, and the video and audio passed through the reciever via HDMI?

I don't think that will happen. HDMI isn't a passive pass thru.

So you're probably better leaving the cable box to the TV and running a separate optical audio for when you want to hear your TV through the stereo?
