BERKELEY, Calif. (Feb. 13) - City council members who were criticized for telling Marine recruiters they don't belong here have moderated their position, saying they oppose the Iraq war but support the troops.

The Berkeley City Council voted two weeks ago to send a letter to a downtown recruitment station advising the Marines they were not welcome.

After a marathon session that stretched into early Wednesday, the council decided against sending the letter, saying it recognizes recruiters' right to be in Berkeley. The council members say they still strongly oppose the war and the recruitment of young people, but "deeply respect and support" the men and women of the armed forces.

Some on the council had pushed for issuing an apology. Others rejected that, saying they just wanted to clarify their position.

Councilwoman Linda Maio said the council opposes recruitment, not the military. "It's behavior that we oppose, not the people," she said.

The meeting drew hundreds of people on both sides of the issue who rallied outside City Hall from dawn until well into the night.

Inside the chamber, scores of speakers addressed the council, some decrying its earlier action.

"You owe our military an apology," said Kevin Graves, a San Francisco Bay area resident who said his son died serving in Iraq.

Others applauded the council's stand.

Medea Benjamin, co-founder of the anti-war group Code Pink, said her group supports the troops - "we support them so much that we're desperate to get them back home."

In rallies outside, pro-troop group Move America Forward sponsored one protest, holding signs that said "Stop Bashing Our Boys." On the other side, anti-war group Code Pink held bouquets of flowers and waved signs saying "Peace Now" and "Bring Our Troops Home."

Police estimated the crowd at about 2,000 at its height. A handful of people were arrested for scuffles between protesters, police spokeswoman Sgt. Mary Kusmiss said.

The recruiting office opened in Berkeley in late 2006. It operated quietly until four months ago, when Code Pink began holding regular protests.

Not mentioned in the article is that there was a threat to cut off all Federal funding to the city of Berkeley, which seems to have done the trick.....hehe.

I'm absolutely amazed that the recruiters "won" that battle in that town. Fantastic.

The fact that the Berkley City Council's moral factor (such as it is) is based upon financial values says it all.

Mean what you say, say what you mean regardless of what it costs.

    These "d00ds" are spineless whores.

    ...with apologizes to whores.

Yep, $2.1 million speaks loudly, even to socialist liberals.

Yep, and the fact that they made a big deal of saying they weren't welcome still might bite them in the ****, and I for one hope it does. It still astounds me that a collective group of people can be that damn stupid.

Correction on the stance or not, I hope the funds are still given to the Marines and not them. It's a major slap in the face to our Military any way you look at it.

    Marines 1 :D
    Berkley 0

I may be naive on the subject, admitted but either you support the war AND the troops or you don't. Kinda like being pregnant. You are or you are not. You can't have it both ways and to say that the recruiters are no longer allowed to do their job in their city clearly [to me] shows that not only do they not support the war, but the troops as well. I say, let the Marines have the money to show that city that WE support them and F*%K what Berkley has to say! If it were up to me, I'd propose stopping all Federal funding to that area, regardless of need. Even if they have a "crisis" that needs National funding. I mean, IMO the city leaders come close to treason, if not committing treason with their decision.

    Rant over, thanks for reading....:)

I can see where you can support the troops, but not the war. But telling the marines they arent welcome there...is certainly NOT supporting the troops. "We support you, but get the hell out" wtf? Sometimes I wish entire towns would just go away...

Spoke with a good friend of mine tonight, and the subject turned to politics
    (imagine that).

One of his close family friends is the owner of one of the largest construction firms in California, with a boatload of sub-contractors.

His friend's firm had sent the Berkley City Council notification saying that his firm was shutting down all construction operations within Berkley Monday.

His firm also sent a list of all the sub-contractors that do business with his firm who would also cease operations Monday.

It was a long list. A very long list.

Berkley had a chance to stand up for their "beliefs", right or wrong, but instead dropped to the ground like groveling chickens.

    Worthless humans.

They don't care, hell the nutjobs from that KS church were protesting a funeral outside the MAIN GATE of Ft. Campbell at one point....You have to be mentally deficient to think that is a good idea....I could give a **** less about Code Pink, or whether or not they agree with the war, they can sit at home and **** at each other about it. I say this because if someone in their family was directly effected by a terrorist act, they would be screaming to put all of the Arabic population in the US in a camp, and destroy all of the Arabic countries. There is no gray area with most of these people, and they are all just sheep, being led around by the head moron.
