Should I sell my CA 840C?

Should I sell my 840C and buy a DAC 1 or DLIII as well as a Squeezebox Duet with the proceeds.
Thoughts?
Or, is the 840C a better DAC? Should I keep the 840C and just buy a Squeezebox?
I think having my music more readily available will increase my enjoyment.

Also note I have a Denon 2910 that I could use as a transport.

My votes for a SB3 w/ good DAC. The Duet looks interesting but not for me. I don't see the benefit over the SB3 and I really don't like the remote. Then again I'm biast, I sold my modded Jolida JD-100 for a SB3.

Which DAC would you vote for? How do you think the 840C compares against the DAC 1 and the DLIII? Any other DAC Recs?

I hope you're not serious!!! You'll have to look awfully hard (as in a lot more $$$$) & even then I'd have to question it, to get better performance from a stand alone DAC or another player than the 840C. It is just absolutely a phenominal player.
Tha icing on the cake is it's digital input that takes advantage of it's stellar DAC & it's state of the art upsampling. That is a marriage made in heaven if you ask me. A SB3 is probably a given in the not too distant future for me & this set up is ideal. A single disc player along w/ a music server, how sweet.

I haven't the faintest. I don't like oversampling DACs and I've never tried anything over the $600 range since my musical tastes aren't to high end. If I had to choose I would go for a MHDT Paradisea on the low end and maybe a Lossless or Altman Attraction on the high end.
If I was you and I liked the 840C I would get a SB3 and try it out through the digital input first. Then buy some used DACs and compare and them to the 840C. Sell the losers. -

Yeah, I think keeping the 840C would be wise. I like the idea of keeping all the parts integrated. Not to mention the DAC seems to be superior from what I can tell.
I think I am just going to pick up an SB v.3 and use the 840C as a DAC. It will be interesting to compare how it sounds against the CD player.
Do I need to get any mods for the SB3 or am I basically exempt because I am not using the onboard DAC? -
Man, that's a nice CD player.
Another option is to run digital audio from the PC directly to the 840C or any DAC, (without the need for a SB) if your home lay-out allows.
If the PC doesn't have a SPDIF output, there are a couple good boxes that convert USB to SPDIF for around $150 (HagUSB and Trends Audio come to mind).
This would allow you to control/play music with a good, simple program like Foobar.
Of course, you loose the ability to select music remotely unless you run video or VGA to the remote room (in my case I ran VGA to my projector, so I can control Foobar remotely). The other option is to just load up the music from the room the PC is in, and then go to the room where it is being played.
Anyhow, just an option...5.1 and 2.0 ch Basement Media Room: Outlaw 975/Emotiva DC-1/Rotel RB-1582 MKII/Rotel RB-1552/Audiosource Amp 3/Polk LS90, CS400i, FX500i/Outlaw X-12, LFM-1/JVD DLA-HD250/Da-Lite 100" HCCV/Sony ES BDP/Sonos Connect. There are a variety of mod options for SB3s. You can get a upgraded power supply, a modded power supply, or a custom built power supply. You can get the unit modded for analog or digital out, with various levels of modification.
I have plenty of experience with these units but I hope other members chime in. I currently own a SB3 with stock psu, one with a bolder modded psu, a Red Wine Audio Analog modded one with a custom made psu, and a bolder enthusiast digital modded one with bolder modded psu on the way.
That said from my experience the power supply upgrade makes a nice difference when the unit is being used as a transport. Not huge but noticeable. I will know how big of a difference the digital mod makes when the unit arrives this week. I imagine the differences would be magnified with a nicer system such as yours. -
Thanks for the input. I'm going to do some research on these. Please let me know how you like the digital mod.

Will do. I'm doing a shootout between the 3 PSUs this weekend as well as a RWA Analog modded SB3 v Bolder Digital Modded SB3 w/ MHDT Paradisea v Stock SB3 w/ MHDT Paradisea. -
A friend of mine who has a very hi-end system was chomping at the bit when I bought the 840C. He has a modded SB3 & was dying to hear the 840C & how it would perform in his system. So I brought it over his house for a demo.
Long story short, he was at a loss for words when he heard the 840C, he was literally stunned at how good it sounded. Then we ran the SB3 thru the 840C & we came to tears. Needless to say he now ownes an 840C. Yeah, I am really hesitant to ever give this thing up, but I am trying to balance my needs as well. I'm not sure I will make the digital jump to servers just yet. I want to make sure I can atleast have the same sound quality as I have now. -

Doesent the 840 have the capability to work as a Dac as well, so if you do go with a server you still use the 840 with it?

Should work well.
